Overwatch Free Content Plans

A new video developer update for Overwatch addresses some popular topics raised by the community about Blizzard's upcoming teamplay shooter. The debut topic reveals their plans to release additional characters and maps for free following the game's launch. "We have ideas for additional maps and heroes that we'd like to add to the game. So, we thought about this, and decided the best way to add them to the game is to patch them in as free content, and not as DLC. So hopefully that alleviates some concerns that people have." The description includes a working index to the various topics covered, which doesn't seem to work from here:
Game director Jeff Kaplan discusses some popular community topics including current plans for additional heroes and maps post-launch, updates regarding an in-game killfeed and scoreboard, and other minor changes coming as a result of player feedback.

0:33 - Plans for additional heroes and maps post-launch
1:52 - Turn off music/control music volume separately
2:49 - Option to have sound play or not play when client is minimized
3:10 - Updates re: in-game killfeed
4:23 - Updates re: end-of-round player commendations
5:26 - Updates re: current scoreboard design
5:54 - Updates re: the "Fire" system
6:45 - Option to always skip Kill Cam

Then again this is Blizzard we are talking about and they keep proving everyone wrong over and over again with their business models.

Everyone I know who played the game (even my wife who isn't really an FPS gamer) has loved it with the sole criticism that the game is a little too twitchy and needs the pacing dialed back a tiny amount. I think it'll do well.

Sounds like right up my alley. Even though I'm on the decline of that curve, I enjoy TF2 every once in a blue moon, and used to be pretty good in Quake and Doom. (In my student days I roomed with the champion Quake1 player of well, I think my country probably, even though we only had local city championships at the time. He even beat Thresh once or twice, man that dude was a major dick and way overrated, and would never play (if he could avoid it). If you're reading this Thresh, psy-mushroom and Pirgo say hi.

yeah, raw reaction speed goes down with age, but most under 24 don't have anywhere near the abilities of a seasoned twitch veteran. it's not just about reaction speed.

also yes, that doom reboot was looking slow as fuck. which was all the more infuriating because during the launch event they said multiple times that it was "super fast paced, just like the original". but the gameplay being shown looked like the same old slow console FPS schlock.

42 here and have no problem with twitch shooters (the faster the game the more of an edge i seem to have). Anyways, as an old school gamer, i'm worried about matchmaking. I've already said that if anyone has the infrastructure to do it right, its Blizzard. Matchmaking feels like a step backward to me so any comments on how its been thus far would be greatly appreciated..

I'm 43 and I've noticed a marked decline in my ability to keep up in games that are too fast paced. Science also agrees with me (our reaction time peaks at age 24 and declines after). I can compensate for this lack of reaction time with wiles (being an old-school Quake 2/Tribes/DOOM/CS player) but I can see people not at the top of the curve struggling with Overwatch in it's current form. Some characters have instant-kill abilities that are hard to dodge if you don't have twitch reflexes.

genuinely surprised that this comments section isn't a chorus of "thank god, pay for a game upfront, get all content, no dlc, no microtransactions, no grind, just all the content with one ticket price"

not that i really care one way or another, there's pros and cons to the F2P model. But it is nice to just be able to play the game without all the bullshit fragmenting of the community.

and as for twitch, i felt that overwatch was just sliiiiightly too fast, like if they dialed it back 5-10% then it would be the sweet spot range. Overwatch felt faster than TF2 IMO. I do love my twitch shooters, but i'm just really not used to them as much, takes some practice to get up to speed. Not cause I'm old (33), but just because when's the last time that there was a popular twitch FPS that interested me? Titanfall? Even that wasn't true twitch... it was CoD-esque twitch IMO. I'd have to say Shootmania is the last real twitch game I got into.

The secret to twitch FPS games is mouse sensitivity. Once you dial that in over a few weeks of play, then you don't have to think, you just twitch.

Hang on so the game is NOT free to play? So there will be no grinding for unlocks then am I right? Right?

Probably not. This update says the new characters and maps (at least initially) will be free. So I assume they'll go the Valve CS:GO route and leave the DLC/drops to be cosmetic only. Though they could go the TF2 route with slight variations on weapons but even there I haven't found much to cry about, most of those items have a significant draw back to them for balance, the default load outs are just fine, and they're easy to unlock. The rare/expensive things in TF2 are still just cosmetic. Hopefully there are no drops at all and it's just a cosmetic Blizz->You DLC market.

Gee, will the ESC key bring up the menu too? Or will that be DLC? Talk about failing game design 101.

So far it looks like those in the stress/beta test have enjoyed it, and those who are not recently had a pet murdered by Blizzard. Maybe a few in between.

Developer Diary was good, but I still want to see them address monetization in the future. I assume we're getting outfits.

Then shooters aren't your thing. Why the need to tear something like this down just because of that? Man the negativity...

Shooters aren't my thing because i don't enjoy a poorly done TF2 clone designed for kiddies/consolers with overdone animations, crappy combat & mmo like class balance?

Wouldn't expect anything else from Blizzard though!
