Out of the Blue

Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating, and here's hoping you have what to be thankful for even if you aren't. I'm feeling gratitude myself, and that you are reading these words is part of the reason. We have a pretty low-key gathering planned at the BlueTower, and I've completed my chores well in advance of the festivities, so my plans for the rest of the day involve eating, drinking, and watching tackle football, all causes to be thankful as well.

Grateful Links: Thanks Ant and Acleacius.

I've almost finished reading the Expanse series of novels. I'm not sure SyFy can do it justice, but if they can keep the show going until the Ring Station is discovered, they could turn it into another Stargate franchise.

i hope it's better than that. stargate was mildly entertaining at best. if there's a scifi series it should aspire to, it should try to be babylon 5.

I was thinking less about show quality and more about longevity and spinoff possibilities. After having watched the episode, the quality's there. Nice zero-g scenes, and the stretched Belters look good. They got Miller's character perfect, I think. I'll probably grow on Holden and Naomi, but Alex and Amos don't match the mental pictures I have of them. Didn't see enough of Havelock to make a decision, and I don't think I heard Avasalara swear once. Something's wrong there

Something you likely overlooked -- "Bio of a Space Tyrant" a five book series by Piers Anthony -- I know, I know. The "sci-fi" factor is pretty low actually. But it's the most realistic view of man's likely early extra-terrestrial expansion into the solar system I've read to date.

Probably can't be considered great sci-fi, but worth the read in my opinion.

Hmmm, I'm always looking for good SciFi. Someone on this forum put me onto the Commonweatlh series by Peter Hamilton which I enjoyed. On the wiki page I see five finished books and another due in 2016, is there an end in sight? I prefer to wait until the series is finished before starting. Hence why I refuse to start on the A Song of Ice and Fire, by Martin. Not Sci-Fi, but the same rule applies.

Personally, I highly recommend Iain M. Bank's culture novels. To date the fictional universe I most wish I lived in.

Yep the Culture series rules. The Expanse books are meant to be read in order but it's not a slow developing series like Hamilton's Commonwealth, there is an underlying plot that weaves throughout but generally speaking the books are episodic and the stories can be enjoyed on their own, like for example Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga. Only the last book so far (book 5) sort of ends on a cliffhanger. Im even more picky when it comes to literature then I am with games, so start reading now, you wont regret it

P.S.
Im not surprised they turned this into a series, there are a lot of recurring characters and they are all very well done. Their relationships and development are as important as the story, and closely tie in to the stories and after a while you think of them as friends, even though they are fictional they are that well developed.

Yeah, that was cool. Nice world building: BSG grittiness meets Firefly multiculturality. And a nice story hook to keep you coming back. Definitely want to be watching more of that.

Happy Thanksgiving all.

That chemical plant explosion video is crazy. Made me think of Just Cause 3.

Is it just me, or does China and Japan have a hard time managing emergencies? I mean....supposed the most intelligent portions of the world, and they fail time after time dealing with human life and emergencies. Putting water (and it looked like a slurry) on a highly volatile chemical is instant no no. I am sure hundreds died - that was BAD!

China yes, Japan no. China has no real infrastructure. Couple that with the rampant corruption and bureaucracy and it's a major clusterfuck.

seems like the highest budget yet... had some zero-grav scenes, also some "fully nude" scenes

you can tell they are serious about it
