EverQuests Expand

Daybreak Games announces the release of the Terrors of Thalumbra expansion for EverQuest II, which is now available through the EverQuest II website. This will soon be followed by the release of The Broken Mirror expansion for the original EverQuest, which they say will show up sometime tomorrow on the EverQuest website. Word is: "These exciting additions to the long-running, massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) series bring new solo and group adventures, features, challenges and more to the world of Norrath." Here's more on each:
WHAT TO EXPECT: The Broken Mirror brings four new expansion zones and three revamped zones to the original EverQuest, as well as instanced, scalable versions of the Plane of Hate and Plane of Fear for level 75-105 raids. It adds new quests, missions, heroic adventures and raids to take on, while introducing new spells, AAs (Alternate Advancements) and a convenient Illusion Key Ring.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Thalumbra is a new overland zone featuring a new contested zone and special quests for Adventure and Tradeskill players. It includes scalable, level-agnostic dungeons for players levels 20-94, plus raid zones, heroic dungeons and advanced solo dungeons for level 100 players. Terrors of Thalumbra evolves the Deity system and also brings the new Item Infusion upgrade system and new best-in-slot relics to EverQuest II.

What ever happened to "Everquest Next"? Did that go into eternal vaporware status?

The main leaders behind that project were among the ones that got laid off when SOE was sold by Sony. While it's still technically in development, the new management has rolled back all the open development stuff the previous guys were all about.

Now they simply don't talk about the game at all and haven't for many months. In fact, on their forums, they don't even allow YOU to talk about the game. There are no sections where suggestions or speculation about the title are considered on-topic. You may only discuss the current Landmark Workshop thing, which no one cares about.

The current thinking seems to be that the project was reassessed by the new owners and deemed too ambitious with the whole fully destructible sandbox thing with persistent AI. Many believe the reason the developers aren't talking is that they are busy reworking the scope of the game into a far less ambitious title to be re-announced later on.

In short, SOE doesn't really have the money or talent to do anything interesting, so whatever Everquest Next might have been, the thing that eventually comes out will bear no resemblance to it.

I thought they would've raised agnostic to 94+ in EQ2. I really like the agnostic concept. I wish all these games would let all players group with each other and give level appropriate awards for completion.
