All you have to do is run a 3rd party software firewall that tells you when traffic is going out, and by what application.
Zone Alarm isn't good because it will allow a lot of Windows stuff through by default and I'm not sure you can configure it not to. I suggest you try PtivateFirewall
... disable all the phone home stuff via the GUI.... and watch all the popups that come up as different portions of Windows still phones home as you do stuff. (And I'm not talking normal crap like DNS, NTP, etc) Then do a whois on the IP addresses and you will see that they belong to Microsoft.
