System Shock Remake Plans; System Shock 3 Possible

There are a couple of System Shock tidbits we missed in the Fast Company interview with Night Dive Studios we mentioned earlier this week, as the developer discusses plans to remake the action/RPG from the ground up, following up on their recently released Enhanced Edition (thanks All Games Beta). And perhaps of greater interest, it turns out that Night Dive now owns the rights to the series, and it's not out of the question that they will eventually turn their attention to creating System Shock 3. This excerpt conveniently covers both topics:
One example: Night Dive is developing a full remake of the original System Shock, going well beyond the basic rerelease that launched a couple months ago. Night Dive has acquired the full rights to the franchise, and Kick says he’s been working with Robert Waters, the game's original concept artist, to reimagine his designs from the early 1990s.

"Seeing the difference between his artistic abilities back then compared to now, and his ablity to reinterpret those ideas, it's just been really exciting for us," Kick says.

Part of the plan for this remake also includes a console version, which would be a first for Night Dive. Kuperman believes much of the company's future growth will come from creating console adaptations for more PC games, along with some ports for mobile devices.

We may even see a System Shock 3 someday, though Night Dive would need a larger publisher to take on the task. Kuperman says the company is "having some conversations" on this front. "To really do another game in that series is going to take resources and time and commitment that we don't have, and it's really not our core business," Kuperman says. (Until now, 2K Games’ Bioshock series has stood in as a spiritual successor.)

Shocked

I'll take the remake, if nothing else.

This is quite interesting, just like the Turok remake, I hope it won't have regenerative health and limit to 2 weapons (like Bioshock Infinite had) I have yet to play the SS1 Enhanced (something I still need to buy) and I played through SS2 with the HD mods.

It always takes me a moment to remember System Shock isn't Deus Ex; but both are the best games ever. I would be fine with either.

Sweeeet.

System Shock = Die Hard On A Space Station. It is PHENOMENAL. I'd love a remake with just modern graphics and control systems and everything else the same.

As long as Square Enix is not doing it I'm thrilled.
SS1 & SS2 are still the scariest and most atmospheric games I've ever played

Would love to see this, recently finally got a chance to play SS2 and just loved it. I'm always turned off by SS1's graphics/HUD though so I'd be really interested to see a modern adaptation.

Um, I thought Ken Levine admitted they had no idea who in the flark even owns the System Shock IP. Who in the world did Night Dive even acquire it from, THAT's a story I'd like to hear; was it on a piece of paper somewhere in some Lawyer's drawer?

So long as it's just updating the tech and not changing the game at all that's sweet.

I could have sworn Blue linked to an interview with the guys a month or two ago, but I can't find it now. Maybe I saw it elsewhere.

Here's something recent:

Meadowbrook’s lawyer wrote back a couple days later, saying the company had just secured the System Shock trademarks from original publisher Electronic Arts. Instead of pitching an entirely new game, Kick proposed rereleasing the originals. Meadowbrook loved the idea, and Kick and Banegas decided to turn around at the Panama Canal.

SS2 is still my #2 game of all time (Half-Life is #1). Probably due to the fact it was the first FPS/RPG I ever played. I eventually tracked down SS1 as it supported the VFX-1 VR helmet I had at the time, but just could never get into it the same way the sequel pulled me in. A remake/sequel would definitely be on my list though, even if the repair wrenches will be as marginally effective as they were in SS2.

As said, just update the gfx and UI and you will make a lot of people happy. Now many will see the first was better than the 2nd even?

SS2 co-op was so amazing. I still have great memories of seeing how much shit we could pile into the elevator and bring between levels - we always designated one person the "inventory lackey" who was responsible for hauling around all the potted plants, basketballs, and other random shit we found to store in there.

"I-I-I I am Sh-Sh-Shodan..-an..."

I'm so happy with this news, it feels like I'm in love.

System Shock 2 was my anchor in a confusing world where pubic hair was a new experience. Nostalgia hits me hard every time I just read or hear the title.
