Out of the Blue

Congrats to the Royals on their World Series victory. They played terrific, aggressive baseball, worked to their strengths and minimized their weaknesses, and clearly deserved to win. I wish Terry Collins had handled the Mets' relief pitching better, but they were definitely out-managed as well as outplayed along the way, and that's part of the game too. The Mets do look like they have a bright future with their young pitching staff, so here's hoping they can make like the Royals and follow losing the series with a successful run next year, but in the meantime I don't want to lose track of what a great campaign they had as it was, as when the season began no one was predicting anything like a championship run for this team.

Anyway, it doesn't matter that the Mets and Giants both fell over the weekend, we're still celebrating today in the BlueTower, since it is the Gunnar-man's birthday. Our awesome little poodle turns 11 today, though you'd never believe it from his vim and vigor. I will do my best to make it a special occasion for him, but that can be a tough trick when dealing with a dog naturally blessed with so much unbridled joie de vivre that every moment seems special to him. It will still be fun trying, though.

Exactly, That show was pretty fantastic, one of the few I watched all the way through and of which I want to get the dvd boxset, the last two star trek movies might have sucked (dunno, didn't watch them) but the guy can do good stuff if he has his hands free.

"CBS is using the new series to push its "CBS All Access" streaming service—first-run episodes will initially be available exclusively on All Access (as opposed to Hulu or other streaming services). The service costs $5.99 a month." This is what happens when too many content creators start fragmenting their online service presence. I already pay $9/mo for Netflix and I'm thinking of subscribing to Hulu Plus or Amazon Prime. I'm not going to pay $6/mo for CBS All Access. Put the show on Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, and Netflix; already established online "Channels". Sigh...

I kind of agree with him on some level though. What made the ST TV series great were the dramatic exploration of human social, economic, philosophical, military, and other issues in a sci-fi setting. The Abrams universe has much less of that.

The Abrams universe has made two MOVIES. Movies about dramatic explorations of human social, economic, philosophical and military issues in a sci-fi setting draw exactly 12 visitors.

It's certainly possible that Kurtzman (note that Abrams is likely not going to be involved) will produce shows that are way more in line with the Star Trek of old. It's also possible that they'll produce TV shows that are 42 minutes of "KLINGONS! PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW! BANG THAT ALIEN SLUT!"

Until such a time as at least a modicum of information is available, I'm not certain why anyone would shit over the news of getting a new Star Trek show. Unless you were such a fan of Berman and Braga and want "Enterprise" to be the final memories you have of Star Trek...

Headed up by the asshole that wrote and produced the Lamebrams travesties? Um no. It's going to suck. Bank on it.

While I liked Abrams first ST movie, I thought Into Darkness was just awful. So, yeah, I don't have much hope for this.

You're talking a bout something that currently has not hired writers yet, and won't be here for over a year.

I was perusing chili variants yesterday when I came across a tantalizing chile verde. In thirty years I'd never managed to actually eat (let alone prepare) chile verde, so I managed to get two birds with one pork shoulder last night.

I gotta say... it's some damn good stuff, and gives traditional chili a run for its money. It's beanless ala Texas style, and the only meat of choice is big chunks of seared pork. One of my favorite Italian dishes is a braised pork ragu, and this is more or less the Mexican version of it.

I'm typically in the camp that managers just cost their teams games with all their boneheaded moves, (the absolute finest managers are a zero-sum equation, ie, at least they don't lose their teams games), but last night in the ninth inning, I genuinely felt sorry for Terry Collins.

It had already become obvious that in order for the Mets to win the World Series, they basically needed 3 shut-outs in a row from Harvey, DeGrom and Syndergaard. The Mets' bullpen was a sieve.

Harvey was shutting the Royals down. It makes sense to bring him back for the ninth and hope he can get 3 more outs. It makes no sense whatsoever to bring Familia in, as he's already blown two saves against the Royals in 4 games.

Then Harvey walks a guy, gives up a double, and suddenly you're screwed. Sure, he probably SHOULD have gone to Familia after the walk, but that's easy to say in hindsight. With the way the Royals had been teeing off on him in the past few games, Familia was just as likely to give up 3 runs and they'd still lose.

The best move probably would have been to bring in relievers for single batters and just play the percentages, but Terry (afaik) does not believe in all that statistical "nonsense", and he didn't appear to have anyone warming up, so... yeah. (Also, WHY did he not have anyone warming up? What the hell was he saving them for??)

In the end, the Royals had a much better offense, better defense, ran the bases far better, and had a much better bullpen. It's hard to win when the only thing that's in your team's favor is your starting pitching.

In any case, congrats Royals. Well deserved.
