Paradox Interactive Acquires White Wolf

Paradox Interactive announces the acquisition of White Wolf Publishing from CCP Games, saying this will now operate as a subsidiary of their company. This puts them in control of the licensing of several properties such as World of Darkness and Vampire: The Masquerade, and expands their business with additional physical products, including tabletop games, collectible card games, and books. Here's the news:
Paradox Interactive, a global games developer and publisher, today announced the acquisition of White Wolf Publishing from CCP Games in an all-cash deal. Now a subsidiary of Paradox Interactive, White Wolf Publishing is a licensing business that owns and manages intellectual properties including World of Darkness, Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: The Apocalypse. Led by CEO Tobias Sjögren, former EVP of Business Development at Paradox, White Wolf Publishing will operate as an independent entity with a dedicated team.

White Wolf Publishing has a long history of producing gaming universes that span mediums, including tabletop and collectible card games, PC games and books. Paradox Interactive acquired all of White Wolf’s brands, and its new subsidiary will pursue development opportunities across relevant categories of games under the White Wolf Publishing name.

“Like Paradox’s games, White Wolf’s properties have dedicated, passionate communities. While there are similarities in spirit, White Wolf’s IPs have very different themes than Paradox’s titles, and deserve their own brand and team,” said Fredrik Wester, CEO and President of Paradox Interactive. “We have great respect for White Wolf’s gaming worlds and see big opportunities for their expansion in the future under our new subsidiary.”

“Over the last 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with beloved studios like DICE and Paradox on the business management side of games, and as a developer earlier in my career. I look forward to bringing my experience to bear as we pursue new ways to interact with White Wolf’s universes,” said Tobias Sjögren, CEO of White Wolf Publishing. “The White Wolf IPs are well suited for all kinds of media and we see great potential to expand them in the future.”

"At CCP, we have great admiration for the White Wolf brands and communities, and it was extremely important to us that the acquiring company share the same respect and understanding,” said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP Games. “With Paradox, we know we are leaving the brands in good hands."

Fion, when Topps acquired WizKids Games that same concerned was raised with Catalyst Game Labs. Turned out to be much ado about nothing. While I'm not a fan of WW's products (they hit the tropes I don't care for) I do wish Onyx Path and Paradox great success in their endeavors, and that the transition is painless for OP.

Saw this coming when CCP cancelled the MMO. They aren't really interesting on hanging on to IPs for no reason.

Hopefully Paradox can get a solid game in the works.

This is good news certainly. White Wolf's World of Darkness (new and classic) are fantastic and largely untapped worlds chock full of RPG goodness.

I just have one major worry here. CCP has licensed the White Wolf RPG line & Exalted to a a company called Onyx Path Publishing which is made up of many talented White Wolf writers and new free-lance talent. Now that White Wolf isn't owned by the same company I worry that Paradox has other plans in mind. This would sadden a lot of people as Onyx Path has been knocking the WoD out of the park with extremely successful reboots of classic WoD such as Vampire: the Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition, Werewolf: the Apocalypse 20th, etc. They've as well as updating the (new) World of Darkness to a 2nd edition that has been selling like hotcakes & getting rave reviews with titles like Werewolf: the Forsaken - the Idigam Chronicle which took the underwhelming first edition Werewolf :tF and turned it into one of their best selling titles to date that hit Platinum Best Seller on DriveThruRPG in < a week.

In terms of what this could mean for the future of White Wolf video games, the future is bright. I'd personally love to see a game based on new WoD that incorporated several lines.. vamps, were's, changelings, demons, etc that let people get together and run their own persistent servers!

Would you like blood to drip from your teeth? That'll be an extra $5 DLC.

Add me to the legions hoping for a new V:tM game!

This. I don't think Paradox has the money to make a full 3D RPG but I'd be perfectly okay with an old-school, isometric CRPG.

Not me. What made Bloodlines great was the game itself, not necessarily the setting. It did help to have a dark setting for me because I love horror. But what I want is another great first person rpg. I know that the first V:tM game wasn't first person, but I think most people didn't like it all that much either.

Good, about the only thing CCP did to it was fuck it up entirely. Their total botch of the MMO they promised is proof of that.

Good, CCP proved entirely unwilling and unable to handle White Wolf properly.

Wow, I never would have believed how that acquisition would turn out. CCP bought White Wolf, released absolutely nothing, and then gutted it. I'm glad to see it out of CCP's hands and that it will be returning to tabletop games. Although I wonder what this means for Onyx Path Publishing.

Well this IP was rotting away at CCP so I guess this is good news. Maybe we get another Masquerade game again.
