Overwatch Beta Today

As Blizzard previously announced, today begins closed beta testing for Overwatch, their upcoming multiplayer first-person shooter. The Overwatch Twitter account has a few additional notes about this. This tweet says there isn't an exact launch time for the beta (though after the current maintenance ends is a good guess) and this tweet explains that once the beta is live, they will begin flagging accounts to participate "in waves," which may take hours to complete. Finally, this tweet notes that there are no "keys" for the beta, warning to watch out for scams offering them. A note later added to the original announcement says this will be available in the EU as well as North America.

Actually that was part of my point games like TF2 have pretty much saturated that market, the only people I see leaving TF2 for this new game are the 1% with the best rigs that can take advantage of all the new eye-candy. Also I don't expect TF2 to retaliate with newer more flashy version.

My response was more about your confusion as to how they can make it profitable not saturation. TF2 has no problem making Valve money with cosmetic items.

This is Blizzard we're talking about. They will make sure that the largest group of players possible is able to comfortably play the game.

This is Blizzard we are talking about. I seriously doubt that the game will be very resource hungry. From what I've seen I think I'm going to like it, but I also liked TF2...

I still feel there is a market for good MMORPGS, but only if they stop copying the carebear gameplay of WoW and its ilk.

MMOs need to go back to their hardcore MUD roots to be successful. The rise of survival games (of all things) proves this. Just look at that ARK Dinosaur game, with a few tweaks it could almost qualify as an MMO.

yes.... and?

its the truth, why wouldnt they try to get ahead of it?

My only concern about this game, aside from balance issues making it less than fun, is whether they're going to make it P2W in any way. If they avoid that, it may have a chance. If any company has shown it can compete in saturated markets, it's Blizzard. That kinda makes me afraid that they may also be one of the few that can get away with P2W. But if it goes that way, I sure won't be playing.

What makes it even more odd is how much money they are raking in with Hearthstone and their new MOBA as to why they are even bothering with FPS.
Uh huh. And why did they even bother with Hearthstone and their new MOBA considering how much money they were raking in with WoW, right?

Did not the day of FPS come and go quite some years ago?

The existing FPS market is over-saturated as it is.

Overwatch looks a lot like Planetside 2 to me, i.e. for whales with only the best rigs money can buy, which is a pretty small market.
I don't see how they can make a profit unless they stoop to selling ships/weapons like Chris Roberts.

Kinda weird, but I guess you're not familiar with TF2.

I'll play some if I get into the Beta but it looks too much like Team Fortress 2. I never got into TF2, it's not really my kind of shooter. Overwatch looks a bit more interesting based on the variety of classes.

I still think Battleborn will end up being more fun because of the PvE elements and account leveling treadmill.

Are you serious? You don't think you'll like this because it's like Team Fortress 2 (which does have PvE stuff) but think Battleborn will be more fun?!?
What color is the sky where you're from?

Yeah, I know it's a stretch to think that the company responsible for the best mixture of rpg and fps (Borderlands) couldn't possibly make a fun online shooter that mixes fps and rpg.

Lol if you think TF2 has any real PvE experience, that cobbled together horde mode is awful. Mass Effect 2 mp had a way better horde mode and the movement and shooting of the ME series is AWFUL.
