Another Steam User Record

Just a week after setting a new Steam record of 10,761,566 players, the Steam Game and Player Statistics page shows that mark was obliterated over the weekend, when 11,625,415 users were logged in at once (thanks DSOGaming). The two most popular games listed are Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, each of which boasts more concurrent users than the rest of the top 10 combined.

Am I alone in the feeling that my preference for Steam is starting to wane?

Not sure if it's due to the flood of poor quality games, or simply my age is beginning to take hold.

My PS4 is much more appealing to me these days... I know, I've committed adultery.

Im with you on this. Im much less interested in the games that do come out, and those that do catch my interest I usually get elsewhere now since I get better deals that way. (For example the Witcher 3) I don't even have the Steam client installed anymore. When a good game that requires Steam comes along, Ill probably be back, but until then Im staying away and not missing it really.
I have a nifty blue line!

Yeah, I only have so much time in the evenings after work, and the ps4 has pretty much dominated that.

Along those lines, I'm shocked how fun the new AC is.

I tend to only stick to single player games on Steam. Multiplayer games I seem to go where my friends are and that is PS4.

Well, the Steam user base keeps growing in general and so does the concurrent numbers because Steam is still set to autostart with Windows by default, right?
A few million of those 11 million probably didn't even know they were logged into Steam.
It's nice advertising for Valve when they announce a new record but it is about as surprising as a new CoD every year.

I thought it was based off users actively playing a game, not just logged in but they don't really clarify it on that page.

Well, they call it Steam "users". You can use Steam in many ways other than gaming.
Also, if you add up the numbers from the 99 most played current games you end up at about 2 million players while there are ~8.7 million current users.
This would mean that an additional 6.x million people would have to be playing thousands of obscure games with less than 3K concurrent players (since 3K is what it takes to be in place no. 99).
Assuming an average of 2K players per game this means that there'd have to be 3,000+ more games with an average of 2K concurrent players.

So, yeah, it's definitely just users as in "logged in" as the news post also states correctly.

Steam has been getting worse for years. A shitty, bloated UI that sees little change except for the worse. Virtually non-existent CS. Sales that have sucked for years now. A useless return policy. On and on it goes. By virtue of their size they remain. Start a competing service that's as bad as they are and you'd never survive now. And it's only because the publishers with their own platforms are too stupid and greedy to compete with Steam that it remains viable.

The statistics page linked in the article labels the line as "Steam users logged in", which doesn't suggest users playing a game.

The biggest thing is that, as a company, Valve has accumulated a lot of good will among the PC gaming community (for some reason - I can't figure it out myself). Origin routinely gets slagged for less because EA has little positive reputation. Battle.net, for all its faults, is frequently praised - mostly because of Blizzard's reputation. UPlay - see Origin, only with less positive to say about the service.

That's why I'm thoroughly convinced that the only company that could legitimately make an honest rival to Steam would be GOG/CD Projekt RED.

You can't be a serious competitor when 2/3rds of all game publishers won't even consider selling their game on your platform due to DRM-Free.

The Steam UI is fine considering the ridiculous number of functions it fulfills and its memory usage is pretty respectable. The customer service is improving too, albeit slowly and its definitely something that should've been there in the first place.

Origin CS is getting worse IMO, the last time I went to use it was a bad experience and I got the impression its outsourced now.

GOG is cool but their client sucks and offerings are pretty sparse. Steam is still the best.

I was going to add that in there, but I figured it wasn't necessary - it would either be inferred or someone else would add it.

I don't know about you guys but I use Steams client messenger all the time to talk with my friends on computer and join games/share links... etc.

It's basically what ICQ and MSN Messenger used to be except with gaming.

I'm amazed at how bad the Steam app performs after all of these years. The app still has huge issues refreshing data in the views, responsiveness is terrible, authentication breaks all the time, etc.

The steam app is just a glorified web app that can manage installations and a streaming server. I think a web app is the right way to go, but it's just implemented poorly. They should be using a reactive interface that handles state change better. It also looks like the app's caching isn't great because it takes too goddam long for content to refresh.

Anyway, I still use the hell out of Steam. I follow many forums and engage quite a bit, but it's a terrible web app. Even the new iOS release is just horrible. Valve has this internal structure where the employees to whatever the hell they want... I can't believe no one with any ability has taking up the charge to modernize this POS app.
