Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns Launches

ArenaNet announces the launch of Heart of Thorns, a paid expansion for Guild Wars 2, their MMORPG sequel, also taking the occasion to announce that over seven million player accounts have been created for the game since launch, a number that was boosted when they recently made the base game free-to-play. There are details on the game on the Guild Wars 2 website along with a previously released launch trailer. Here's part of the announcement, which offers all the info from an infographic without the frills:
The new infographic from ArenaNet catalogues hard data and fun factoids that highlight the continuing popularity of Guild Wars 2 across the game, from open world players who focus on story content and world exploration to those who participate in the game’s increasingly competitive Player vs. Player (PvP) and World vs. World (WvW) scenes. ArenaNet recently announced the launch of a $400,000 Guild Wars 2 Pro League PvP tournament, launched in partnership with ESL, and the infographic highlights how PvP player participation has grown by 135 percent since last year. There is a statistic showing that 40 percent of max level players showed up in starter zones to welcome new players the day the core game went free, showcasing the friendly reputation of the player community. Topping it all is an astronomical figure – more than 1.4 billion hours – totalling the amount of time players have put into Guild Wars 2 since launch, nearly the same time modern humans have spent walking the earth.

Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns now extends the core game experience for this growing community as a paid expansion with a range of new content and features, including a unique new system called Masteries that redefines endgame character progression in Guild Wars 2. The expansion marks a couple of additional firsts for Guild Wars 2, introducing Guild Halls where guilds and groups of players can claim and customise a piece of the game world, and setting the stage for the first-ever Raids coming to the MMO and activating shortly after launch. As with the original Guild Wars 2, which delivered more than 40 major content updates without charging a subscription fee, players who purchase Heart of Thorns will have access to future releases coming to the expansion free of charge.

I know! But pay less does not mean get it for free. Then again, I could agree if they gave the base game for free as long as they would in a way honor the support of those who paid for the game that they're giving away for free by offering their loyal player base a rebate on the expansion. But the veterans get NOTHING, the newbies get a complete free game. And this is plain WRONG. Oh my, whatever. Won't look back and have plenty of other games to play. ArenaNet is now on my shit list - no more money from me. That's the only message they understand. I can wait till they offer the expansion for free.

That said, there are still ways companies can do things that don't pass the smell test, this could be one. We get the $ value, but there is still things that can happen that aren't quite right. Perhaps that happened here.

What kills me on going back to mmo's after a long time off them... I feel lost and helplessly behind even in a sideways progression game like GW2. Because there are always secrets(tm).

The solution is to play by yourself, that way you aren't comparing anything to anyone else. Thankfully, the vast majority of stuff to do in GW2 can be done solo.

Yay, mmo for solo, which almost all have become.

I got back into the game about two months ago after a year off. I was totally lost for a bit, but you get the hang of it again. I'm almost done crafting my ascended armor for my guard. Just the helmet left!

And no one does Halloween like GW2.

I'm with Kxmode on this one. I've gotten waaay more entertainment value playing GW2 than the fifty bucks I spent on it. I like exploration, so just climbing up to the various Views and checking out all the hard work and polish that went into this game is worth the fifty bucks alone.

Yes. Some people just like to bitch about things. Guild Wars 2 is the only major MMO that I know of that is Buy 2 Play. Buy the game for $50 and you never pay a subscription fee, ever.

In over 3 years Arenanet never charged a dime. The math came out to something like $1.30 per month.

($50 / 1151 days since launch) x 30 average days in a month = $1.303214596003475

I don't know about you guys but I call that a bargain.

I think The Secret World is B2P. You could argue whether it's a major MMO or not.

Because paying $50 for a game with free content included with no sub fee -- not to mention it's been out for 3.5 years -- isn't value enough? Rolleyes

No. If you bought the Guild Wars 1 expansions you only got access to those new regions but not to the base game.

It's more or less happened with WoW too, albeit to a lesser extent. You can't buy the vanilla WoW experience anymore. When you do, it now comes bundled with all of the previous expansions (up to MoP) except for the most current (WoD).

It's just marketed differently so it's perceived better. You would still have to buy the base game, only it comes with the extra expansions, whereas with GW2, it feels like newcomers are on a level playing field with veteran players when purchasing the expansion.

That said, whoever is in charge of productizing GW2 at ArenaNet has always been this way. Their practices since release has always been in favor of enticing new players without any thought of existing players. For example they updated their digital deluxe edition SKU & upgrade bundle to include $20 worth of in game store goodies - but those that had previously purchased that digital deluxe upgrade were out of luck. A lot of it is really just poor marketing. They should have made it a differently named package altogether to get rid of the perception of someone losing out, but time and time again, they managed to get themselves into this situation. It just goes to show how much thought they put into their existing player base from a productization standpoint.

The mastery system is awesome! It's about as close to the primary and secondary professions from Guild Wars 1 as you can get. My main is a Guardian. With the Dragonhunter mastery for the first time I can equip a long bow making my class a Guardian / Hunter hybrid.
