Activision Blizzard Opens Esports Division

Activision Blizzard announces the formation of a new division to support the burgeoning world of esports, saying they have appointed former ESPN CEO Steve Bornstein as chairperson and MLG co-founder Mike Sepso as a senior vice president of the new unit. The announcement covers the company's history in esports, and states the mission of this new division is to "build on the Company's competitive gaming leadership by creating all-new ways to deliver the best-in-class fan experience across games, platforms and geographies, furthering the development of its world-leading esports ecosystem." Here's a quote on all this from the big guy:

"Celebrating our players and their unique skill, dedication and commitment is the essence of our esports initiatives," said Bobby Kotick, Chief Executive Officer of Activision Blizzard. "Blizzard Entertainment and Activision Publishing have been leaders in the development of esports. With that leadership, our strong franchises, our deep history and experience in esports, and now two additional industry leaders, we intend to further enhance our efforts and make certain this remains an important growth driver for Activision Blizzard."

Kotick added, "There are no better leaders for this new initiative than Steve and Mike. Steve has unparalleled experience in creating a sports network powerhouse and his groundbreaking leadership at ESPN and the NFL Network shaped how the whole world experiences sports. Mike's entrepreneurial vision helped make 'esports' a household word and he is uniquely positioned to take the experience to the next level."

The board rooms at these Korporatized behemoths love MOBAs mainly because they don't have to keep on board a ton of writers, new content and instance designers and artists. PVP is cheap to develop and maintain as the players provide all the challenge.

The fact they nixed Titan, Wow's follow up says it all. WOW is pretty much in a circling until the subs dry up pattern with very few resources going into further development.

The biggest problem with this is that it's tied to a game publisher - it needs to be an agnostic independent, not someone who's got an agenda (and a series of games) to push...

No it's not. None of those companies started out with the express purpose of making money. It's only as they had success doing what they love that the bean counters came on board, took over and turned them into souless corporations only interesed in the bottom line. No, it is most certainly not always and only about the money.

Before diablo 3 i would have agreed. After nope.
I, for one, played Diablo 1 & 2 for the excellent stories.

Has Starcraft 2's story been good?

Still haven't purchased the game. Guess I'm waiting until I get pass the glut of current games and coming soon stuff: Witcher 3: HOT expansion, Life is Strange, GW2: Heart of Thorns, Fallout 4; maybe Assassin's Creed: Syndicate.

I think at some point Blizzard is going to abandon single player games and the MMO market and focus almost exclusively on eSports and MOBAs (Overwatch, Hearthstone, etc). Sounds like there's a lot of money to be made in that niche and there's definitely a huge demand for it. Rather sad because Blizzard is really good at telling stories. Oh well. More power to them for trying new things.

On the current Diablo 3 patches or the expansion? Because you guys realize they are working on another expansion for the game.

With only one panel, I doubt we'll see much, if any, of an expansion announcement. They'll likely go over 2.3, preview 2.4, and then they might get enough time to say Necromancer before running off stage.

I just mean that they most certainly have more than 5 people working on the expansion.

They got their top men working on it!

There are probably like 5 people left working on Diablo 3 patches.

I think you're being far too generous with 5. They only have one panel for Diablo 3 at Blizzcon whereas every other title has two or more and it's probably just going to be two people jerking each other off about 2.3 for an hour.
