I'm almost positive TWC throttles YouTube...

I have TWC too here in KCMO. The people across the street have Google Fiber. So close, yet so far away...

Anyway, I'd rather just pay directly to subscribers of my choosing (with YT getting a cut) than find out that half of it is just going to PewDiePie.

I'm sure this sums it up for a lot of people. Youtube/Google will never see a cent from me.

I don't want to belabor a point you're probably already well aware of.. buuuut...

Odds are, Google/YouTube (or both), have likely made more than a cent off of you at some point.

Works fine for me most of the time in central EU except for the weekends sometimes. Saturday/Sunday afternoons and evenings can be a little slow and then it drops from 1080p to 480p or lower in extreme cases.
So I'd say it's Google/YT. They can't handle the weekend onslaught.

They either throttle it or their peering/routing to Google servers is terrible.

Well there was this post a couple years back about firewalling specific google CDNs to speed things up, and it worked for me to an extent, but HD playback is still way spottier than it should be, and ONLY with YouTube. My modem is reporting solid signal and I have a very hard time believing the fault is with Google's servers.

To be fair, Youtube's streaming quality has become terrifyingly shit over the past year and a half or so... Even on my old job's 300Mbps pipe it ran like shit.

But whether that's because of Google not keeping up with the required infrastructure, or because all ISPs now throttle Youtube to promote their own terrible video alternatives, will probably remain anyone's guess.

Lets just hope they don't start canning the 1080P+ videos and forcing people to use "Red" to get access to the higher quality HD videos and such.

Shhhhhh! Don't give them any ideas.

They either throttle it or their peering/routing to Google servers is terrible. Either way, they suck. And of course they do, because why not? It's not like they have any competition.

"YouTube Red", not to be confused with "RedTube".

I just don't see the value in it. Adblocking is free already, and $10-13/month is hugely overpriced.

Yeah, $4 / month or $40 / year is more like it. Both Netflix and Amazon Prime offer more for for less than $10 or $13 per month.

Also, did no one at YouTube realize that "YouTube Red" was just a little too close to "RedTube" for comfort?
