No Disc in Might & Magic Heroes VII Collector's Edition

This reddit thread and this thread on the Ubisoft forums reflect discontent among some purchasers of the Might & Magic Heroes VII Collector's Edition after they discovered this does not contain a game disc, but rather includes a code to download the strategy sequel. It was never explicitly stated that there would be a game disc, but a PC DVD logo on the listing on the Official Ubisoft Online Store (perhaps referring to the soundtrack) suggested this, and one of the perks of the CE is actually a collector's box to hold the nonexistent disc. There are a few responses from Ubisoft community management, but these seem isolated to those having trouble downling the game from Uplay. Thanks Darren.

Digital delivery is here to stay. It's better for the environment, lower carbon footprint and all that jazz.
I don't know why you brought up mice and keyboards. I use a g602 mouse and ducky zero one with cherry mx browns. The boxes that these input devices came in had no sway on my decision, they were each ordered sight unseen, digitally, from the internet.

And the fact that that gaming companies can shunt costs that would've covered production of those dvd's onto the populace by way of raping their bandwidth and caps and saving buttloads of dosh, while still keeping the price of the game artificially high even factoring in that huge reduced line-item costs for the physical media and buying shelf space.. well, I'm sure the decision is making someone at corporate rather rich, er... pleased.

And here I thought making manuals into .pdfs was a douche move. (hugs his Falcon 4 3-ring-bound cardboard encased manual from days of glory past).

It used to be cool to open up a new game. Those of us who've been around awhile know what's missing, and we're not seeing any quality of life improvement by way of the move to try to shove everything down 'teh intertoobs'. I still have my cloth maps from the various Ultima games, a few of the coins and manuals lying about, and way too much other stuff from various other games that made it feel (subjective, I know, but still) that devs gave enough of a damn back in the day to try to give you more of an experience than just opening an box empty save for a game code.

I know, I know.. I get it. I'm officially old now. And as I sit here going in my head 'damnit, it was better back in the day!', I join a long distinguished line of humans going back in time that were all sure in their head that they were right.

So... pbththththth

You sound like getting a dvd inside of a cardboard box is almost as important as the data that's on it. Some kids like to play with the box, others would rather play with the contents. I'm a content person myself.
I recommend that you get a shoebox and toss a cd in it, every time you buy a game just pick up the box, shake it and peek inside.

Digital delivery is here to stay. It's better for the environment, lower carbon footprint and all that jazz.

Heh, a "game lawyer" (pretty sure how he referred to himself in thread) had posted in the Ubisoft forum thread linked in the article asking for any concerned/wronged parties to contact him.

It was deleted pretty quickly.

Well seeing as how that's what we did with floppies and cds...

And people on Google fiber probably don't give a shit, but on my terrible connection it's much faster to write from a disc than to download anything.

But wouldn't you rather have it on say one thumb-drive or a Blu-Ray than multiple-DVD's?

Who wants to deal w/ disc-switching on the install? Bleh.

I'm sure everybody prefers having their games on disc.

But, for those who are well-connected and like the excellent sales we often get here digitally - retail is a waste to even think of. Only time retail might be worth while to us is when a game is on major clearance and/or blow-out sale.

Problem seems to be, especially on the PC, at retail is that they keep sticking them on DVD's. That's especially even worse for the bigger-sized games. Who the heck wants to install 30+ GB games from on a ridiculous # of DVD's? What I'd do if they did the above that is just take my retail copy and if it connects to a service (like Steam, Origin, UPlay, etc) - I'll just let it do the download and go do something else for a while like watch a movie, TV show, or something else.

It's time PC retail starts shipping games on some format that's more logical for PC gamers.

BR format never really got adopted enough on the PC (plus Sony is behind that format, who Microsoft don't get along with); since HD-DVD format failed (which Microsoft was behind); and game-downloads became more popular here (thanks to Steam, Origin, GOG and other services - and much better pricing sales than what retail often offers).

Even putting games a huge GB laced thumb-drive that contains the entire game would make more sense than this crap. That certainly would have games taking up less space on the shelves than even a slim-DVD case, as well - which retail surely would love.

And likely, most people have a USB port to stick a thumb-drive in.

I used to love the Heroes Series, so it pains me to say it, but, if you play anything by Ubisoft, you deserve whatever you get (or, don't get).
