I don't think there is a market for the "cover-all-bases" type space game CR is hawking.
Anyone who wants a zero G, large scale combat 3D game can get it for a few bucks in the form of Freespace Open. Anytime I need a space combat fix, I fire it up. But very few people play this game today.
It is too grognardy and has too many controls and variables for todays mostly console trained gamers. Look at what is selling these days in terms of space games. Eve, Elite, Space Engineers, a some buzz for No Man's Sky.
I think CR knows there is no market these days for deep, complex space game. Eve has the social space market sewn up, Elite is doing OK in the basic combat space arena, and Space Engineers give those who want exotic one of kind ships, lets them build them as they like.
CR has discovered how to milk whales with limited edition digital ships. He won't exit or deliver anything until that income stream drys up.
As far as convention demo reels go, those are all pure magic 3D rendered fantasys. I may watch them just to enjoy the artistry that went into creating them, but I don't plunk down cash until a real product has been play tested by impartial players.
