CIG Demands Escapist Retraction; Threatens Lawsuit

An update to the Chairman's Response to The Escapist on the Roberts Space Industries website has the latest on Cloud Imperium Games' reaction to the recent Escapist article alleging troubles at the developer of Star Citizen, the upcoming crowd-funded space game. The post has been modified to demand a retraction of the assertions in the article, threatening legal action if this doesn't happen by the end of today. They say the site has "violated the most basic rules and ethics in journalism by failing to properly vet [their] sources and providing the affected party with an opportunity to refute these ridiculous, highly slanderous, and easily disproven allegations," and also state this was not a legitimate piece of journalism, but rather a conspiracy between the author and "third parties" (who go unnamed, though we have a guess). They reproduce a lengthy letter they sent to the Escapist, and here is how this concludes:
If we have not received within a reasonable time your written confirmation (email being sufficient) that you agree to cooperate and comply with the above demands we will firstly publish this letter to our website. Based on the generous standards set by you, we believe that 24 hours should be sufficient to hear from you. Furthermore, if we have not received the aforementioned confirmation from you or your magazine and/or parent company by EOD Monday, we will turn this matter over to our litigators to prepare legal action in the US and the UK against the individuals and entities involved as listed herein.

Thomas Hennessy, CIG’s Videographer, commented on the latest controversy in a recent podcast interview

https://soundcloud.com/imperialnewsnetwork/innside-cig-thomas-hennessy/s-t5oor

Basically he states:
"Controversy sells either its true or not. It is sad. People are working hard and its almost like a personal attack...I would say this... If SC is a scam it is one of the worst scams ever. Because we are actually building a game. If it was really a scam why would open all these offices, hire all these people, doing all this work...It is unfortunate that sometimes headlines and controversy sells, but its not.."

I genuinely do not believe that SC is a scam, as in that they're just trying to rake in as much money as possible and when the well dries up, they take it and run. That's not what it is. Some Joe Schmoe runs off with 50K from Kickstarter and nobody except the people who got taken really give a shit and nobody is going to go nuts over it. You take off with 90 million, however, and someone WILL hunt your ass down. Also, the devs working for CIG would not be part of that, as they would see little to nothing of that money and would forever ruin their names in the industry.

I DO think, however, that they are selling flash over substance, are focused almost solely on pretty pictures of pretend starships, and are taking advantage of the gullibility / craziness of people who keep forking over hundreds if not thousands of dollars for said pictures of pretend starships.

I think they're going to keep selling these bullshit ships-for-$400 for as long as they can, just to keep everyone employed. Every month that they can pull in 2-3 million is another month everyone gets paid, gets to travel around the world "to visit all the studios" on backer dime, etc. Only once that well appears to dry up, will something 'final' be shipped.

In that, I can see why an ex-employee would say that he feels it to be a 'con.'
