SOMA Movie

This video (NSFW) from Frictional Games kicks off a series inspired by SOMA, their recently released survival/horror game. This "transmission #1" is a live-action prequel film, and they say more will follow daily, though we don't know for how many days. This debut installment is quite impressive.

They're really good, I'm still playing through SOMA so I'm not sure if I should be watching these but it really gives you the creeps.

Damn, they should just make this into a show already.

So hey, Timmy, do you know what the purpose is here? The game is out already. Games make 90% of their sales the first month

It's been out a week. Also they released another series of live-action videos months before this, but they didn't get a "ton" of views. Maybe they're hoping to generate more views since the game has just launched.

I did sound on a day of this shoot, in a bit that comes later, and know a bunch of people on the production. I haven't played the game and still have no idea what's going on, even having read that day's sides. I'm definitely intrigued, though, and I'm happy to see this making it out into the wild, a huge amount of work was going into the detailed execution of a well-laid-out plan from what I saw. And if it sounds like I'm being vague, we're under NDA until they release the whole thing.

So hey, Timmy, do you know what the purpose is here? The game is out already. Games make 90% of their sales the first month. What's the point of doing the marketing now? It's unusual, so I'm curious what they're trying to achieve.

Maybe you can tell me if this is directed by Ian Hubert... He uses the dude in this video in so his other works (Dynamo, Project London)

I think he directed the older Soma ads and even some other video game ads... But it doesn't look like he publicizes them as his works. inquiring minds want to know!

It's also the best horror game.

I didn't get much horror feeling from it, but I'm not done yet. It feels more like an exploration game to me. Sure there's a few spots that I could feel the hairs stirring, but mostly it was "Huh, wonder what that is" or "that looks neat" or "somebody had a bad day here".

Yeah, definitely, but there haven't been many good horror games. There's definitely spots that are as scary as Amnesia though.

Soma is a masterpiece. What's the best story of 2015 so far? Life is Strange, Witcher 3, Metal Geat V? It's Soma. It's also the best horror game. It's not perfect though.

Edit: I haven't seen this video yet, but you may not want to spoil yourself.

I think I would have tried to capture the claustrophobic feel, large open warehouse setting seems out of place. Live actors using the actual game environments would have been interesting and not technically difficult today.

Still a cool marketing vehicle instead of the usual fast edit hype trailers.

That was really good. Not sure it makes much sense if you haven't played the game. Well done though.

Yeah, that's the central conceit though: lay out the mystery to entice people to play the game and find out what the fuck is going on. It's working on me.

Similar to the other vids that came out two years ago. Strange timing though. Release vids 2 years ago. Release nothing after that until after the game ships. Aren't the purpose of these to raise awareness? Shouldn't the three movies have come out 6, 4, and 2 months before game release?

Still very cool well-done vid.
