Yes, but the payment he received were for an incomplete, buggy game (hence the EA warning on steam). He met his requirements. If he doesn't meet steams EA policy for updating it, themn it could be and should be removed. The people who bought it still received what they purchased, a partially finished buggy game, the same thing with every OTHER unfinished EA game. And most will remain unfinished. Again hence the warning on ALL EA games.
The kickstarter funds etc... were for future game, with promised release dates.
I am not defending DS's game, I am laughing that the two are in any way comparable from a funding/accountability standpoint. If CR/Star Citizen wanted an easier route to run away, less public spotlight in this respect etc... they could have been on Steam like DS.
Early Access Game
Get instant access and start playing; get involved with this game as it develops.
Note: This Early Access game is not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development.
True which is why I personally wouldn't compare him on quite the same level though many of his arguments could be easily turned around on him and in some ways he looks much more like a flim flam man than Roberts so I understand why people make those arguments and feel that the pot/kettle analogy applies.
Roberts appears to be a well intentioned but ultimately incompetent producer. Smart looks to be much more like a dedicated troll (I was there for the usenet flamewars involving him and it hasn't changed at all since then) and deliberately putting out a subpar product without the intentions to ever finish it. I would not be shocked if it was pulled from steam in the near future due to the exceptionally poor quality. I mean they both have issues, it just boils down to which you feel is worse. EA means Early Access it doesn't mean a false bill of goods (see that Zombie game that got in trouble) and that's very much what the DS game feels like. *shrug*
Me, I'm just going to see how it'll all shake out, I know the 31 dollars I spent on SC I feel like I wasn't too hosed even if it never progresses beyond this but I know I would never buy another DS product after 3000 AD and his ongoing blatherings but each to their own.
