System Shock Enhanced Edition on GOG.com

GOG.com announces they are now offering System Shock, a version of the action/RPG classic updated by Night Dive Studios, and devoid of DRM, as is the GOG.com way. The changes to what they are calling the Enhanced Edition include mouse look and support for widescreen monitors (though not at particularly high resolution), though the release also includes a classic mode with no changes other than support for modern computers. There will be a live stream discussing the game on Twitch tomorrow at noon EDT. This trailer offers a look at the enhanced version of the game, and here's word, including details on a discount for those who already own the GOG.com edition of System Shock 2:
On release, System Shock forever changed the face of action gaming - it ushered an era of storytelling, choices, and RPG elements - directly influencing all-time classics like Deus Ex and Bioshock. Today, the legend returns in better shape than ever.

"With System Shock: Enhanced Edition, we're implementing game-changing improvements, including mouselook, widescreen, and a high resolution display mode," says Stephen Kick, CEO of Night Dive Studios. "The classic game has never been more accessible to a modern audience."

The re-release supports resolutions up to 1024x768 (compared to the original 640x480), and a native 854x480 widescreen mode. Gameplay was also streamlined with a toggleable mouselook mode, including more intuitive inventory and item management. Combined with assorted bug-fixes and remappable controls, System Shock is now truly enhanced.

Some gaming experiences are truly worth preserving. Gamers can also return to the authentic 90's gameplay with System Shock: Classic - ready for modern systems, completely unaltered in all other aspects. Both releases are available in a single package, with a 40% discount for all System Shock 2 owners on GOG.com - and 20% off for everyone. The discounted offer will last until Tuesday, September 29, 6:59 AM GMT.

Personally, I don't feel the need to go back and play this again, but I'll never forget the tension of creeping out of the lift onto a new floor, and suddenly being attacked by deadly flying space omlettes (or whatever the hell those things were). Luckily I had my trusty laser stick with me...

Hahahahaha, yes.

In fact, sloooooowly creeping is a very wise method of travel in this game, because you can and will get ganked otherwise, especially as you go to the higher/later parts of the space station.

I realize it is showing its age, but this was an utterly amazing game when it first came out. The level design, mechanics, suspense, atmosphere, frenetic pacing, etc. - I was not prepared for what this game brought to the table.

On the scare scale, this came out above Undying and System Shock 2, based upon their respective release dates.
Never have I loved being scared so much...
Wishing I had another game experience anything close to this,
Ray

Well if you do then make sure you grab all of the Texture Packs for this. You defiantly don't want to play it without those.

Scroll down the page on this one to and hover your mouse over the screenshots to see the visual difference.

Those are System Shock 2 mods. I'd be amazed if there are texture mods for an old DOS game. (I remember first playing this in 320x200, then upgrading my PC, and being able to run the 640x480 version. It was mindblowing.)

Night Dive deserves a ton of credit here, I think. I'm surprised they were able to put mouselook in, that's pretty awesome. One of my all-time favorite games, and in my opinion superior to the sequel.

For sure, credit where credit is due for Night Dive. I read that GOG normally tries to seek assistance, where possible, from any groups or persons that managed to get specific old games running or updated over the years. If not that, they do the work with their own team.

Aren't those all System Shock *2* mods? For anyone who's going to play this then SS2 though, yes.. current mods can enhance SS2 greatly, that page seems to have all the essential ones.

It might happen with MW2 and 3 because they were published by Activision (right?) but it won't ever happen for MW4 because Microshit just don't give a fuck.

Maybe, although with MicroShaft - there's always a sliiim hope, since they have allowed some of their other old game franchises to be re-released and enhanced like AoE.

It is a fantastic game. Some of the level design is amazing, and the atmosphere is brilliant (even better than System Shock 2, imo.)

Someone once described it as "Die Hard on a space station", and it is very, very apt.

Truly a great game.

You won't regret it. Played and enjoyed it for the 1st time back in '94. Same league as SS2. Yes, graphics are dated but the game itself is top notch and this is what counts.
