Out of the Blue

I'm gearing up for the end of the grilling season in style, as I have a brisket to smoke, which will be my first effort at smoking anything larger than a rack of ribs. I'll do this over the weekend, since it is a time-consuming affair, but I'm looking forward to the challenge, though I'm tempering my expectations, since it will be my first time.

By law, yes. Unsure if it refers to weight or volume. Regardless, you should eat jam instead of jelly. Still has the whole fruit in it. Also, they make less-sugar and low-sugar jams.

Or just use a little honey. Despite it's sweetness, it's only got a GI of 50, less than banana. And I find I need less than half the amount of jam.

You know what, I made my own peanut butter once. It tasted exactly like a jar of Jif, except mine was grainy and oily (because I don't have an industrial-strength food processor). And Jif has a whopping 3g of sugar per 2tbsp, which is roughly 8% of the sugar content of a can of Coke, and 6% of daily sodium. Just because a food isn't stocked in Heavily Bearded Hipster John's Coop doesn't mean it's going to give its consumers diabetes and heart disease.

For example, I often see jelly that is sold at a discount but when looking at the label, I notice that sugar is listed as the first ingredient.

Jelly is like one part sugar to one part fruit. That's like saying you saw a sweet tea with a ton of sugar in it.

Other brands do the same, but yes, unless I'm using it to bake my peanut butter had better have peanuts be the first ingredient, and have neither sugar nor partially hydrogenated oils anywhere in it.

Additional salt, in some cases, isn't awful. From a guy that dislikes salt...

Just an added $12 a jar.

Haha. It's not that expensive. I can understand wanting to save money but often saving money means purchasing non-pure ingredients. For example, I often see jelly that is sold at a discount but when looking at the label, I notice that sugar is listed as the first ingredient. What's happening is that a person may think he/she is saving money, but is in fact paying more per-sugar as it is being used as a substitute for a lesser quantity of the main thing. Better off getting the smaller and 'seemingly more expensive' product that has less or no additives.

Eventually, meat and dairy prices will be too expensive, and most people will be defacto vegans.

I don't see that happening any time soon and people already pay a premium for meat in many places.

1/2 cup of Greek yogurt has 12 gr of protein and about 70 calories.

1/2 cup tofu has 10 gr of protein and 90 calories.

Yeah but they also taste fucking awful. I pan seared and baked to finish a nice skirt steak last night, served with roasted garlic potatoes and carrots, ended with cinnamon chip scones I'd just made... now that's good eats. The scones in particular (the trick is shredded frozen butter).

Tofu is a bit of an acquired taste, but cottage cheese and yogurt taste awful? I brought them up because they're pretty popular in the west, and an easy, low-cal way to get protein if you're vegetarian, since InBlack was asking.

As for the fish, enjoy it while you can. Stocks are collapsing.

As long as you're eating dairy regularly and have a well-balanced diet otherwise, you should be fine without resorting to meat. You'll get plenty or B-12. It's really the vegans that have to be careful.

Whole grain (or better yet multi-grain) breads and pastas, milk, yogurt, nuts and beans, sunflower seeds on your salad... I eat meat every day, but it is super easy to get a lot of protein even without it. With a hearty bread, you can get like 25-30g protein just from a peanut butter sandwich and glass of milk. Which is a light breakfast or a snack to me.
