Gilbert to Disney on Monkey Island Rights: "Call Me"

This month marks the 25th anniversary of the release of The Secret of Monkey Island, the first installment in LucasArts' fantastic point-and-click swashbuckling adventure series (thanks PC Gamer). Ron Gilbert, one of the game's creators, has a big post on his Grumpy Gamer blog to commemorate the occasion, offering anecdotes and images of some artifacts from the game's development like concept sketches and photos of floppy disks (the newfangled 3½" variety!). He also tosses it out there that he would be interested in buying the rights to continue the series if Mickey is willing to sell:
I don’t know if I will ever get to make another Monkey Island. I always envisioned the game as a trilogy and I really hope I do, but I don’t know if it will ever happen. Monkey Island is now owned by Disney and they haven't shown any desire to sell me the IP. I don’t know if I could make Monkey Island 3a without complete control over what I was making and the only way to do that is to own it. Disney: Call me.

Maybe someday. Please don’t suggest I do a Kickstarter to get the money, that’s not possible without Disney first agreeing to sell it and they haven’t done that.

Why bother making a new Monkey Island game? Gilbert has the most important assets anyway: his reputation, his experience and most of all, his writing/storytelling ability. Re-work the ideas into a new setting/cast of characters and rake in the money. "It can't be good game unless it's got Guybrush Threepwood!" Horseshit.

I do kind of agree on this... but at the same time I would really like another Monkey Island game.

That being said, Gilbert has stated that he wouldn't do another one unless he owned the IP (he said this in one of his blogs a year or so ago, he softened it to "i don't know if I could..." for this one, but I get the sense that, really, he still wants to own the property.

Disney isn't going to sell it off. Nevermind that I don't see them doing it in general, but Monkey Island kind of competes with the Pirates of the Carribean franchise (seriously... how many direct PotC attraction references are in the original), so they're definitely not letting it go.

This is way more than needed to be written, but I'm 75% drunk and feel like ranting. lol.

Eh. Disney might sell it off. The Lucasgames stuff is literally the very bottom of what they bought Lucasfilm for.

Dude! You can't get SSS ranking if you don't get all 110%!

Well, I'm like 95% now.

The deal I have is that if they're worthy of all that nostalgia and praise, they should have no problem making a successful money-grab by making a new IP.
I know for a fact creating/running a game studio is an insane amount of stress and difficult decisions, but whenever this happens it feels like a public display of lack of confidence in their ability to make something worthwhile, and I lose a little respect for the creator.
It doesn't help that he and Shafer had a couple semi-flops returning to their "roots" already. That will shake the confidence further, I'm sure. But I still hate it.

At a certain point it's clear that some beloved creators are just flailing about wildly to continue, or reacquire, their past success, and grabbing at existing IPs for the sake of nostalgia just seems pathetic and lazy. Gilbert, et al... show us you're actually the talent people think you are by not trying to grab the ledge of past successes.

I would like to play an old school adventure game of Ron Gilbert trying to acquire the Monkey Island rights from Disney. I'm serious.

And now that SW games are for some reason in EA's hands, I can't wait to NOT buy/play EA's X-Wing 2 and TIE Fighter 2 if ever such a thing becomes a reality. *shudders*

Well its all about IP ownership is it not? Look at the troubled past of Fallout, going from Interplay to Bethesda. And one thing big corps do not do is let IP's go.
