Out of the Blue

I thought yesterday was the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina from all the discussion of the occasion, but I quickly realized I was a day off, and the anniversary is actually today. A mention of it was posted here briefly before I realized my error, and my comment was it seemed surprising this was that long ago, but only one day later I've grown more accepting of this, not because another 24 hours passed, but just in thinking more about it, and recognizing my perception was mostly based on not thinking too much about it. It's been a long haul getting New Orleans back into shape, and here's a salute to all those who remain committed to the area.

Let's just change the name of the city to "New Atlantis" and be done with it. As for pointing fingers at dem vs repub, I prefer to think of the problem as inside the beltway is only concerned with inside the beltway - and the rest of the country can go fish.

Now pardon me while I slip into my nomex long johns... Flood

Given that NOLA is next to the ocean, below sea level, and sea levels are rising, logic dictates it should be abandoned. I

sweep it under the rug, its "The American Way™"

'Inequality' is noted as an issue 10 years later but that is more on the economy as a whole under Obama.

"Here's a pop quiz: How much money has Uncle Sam spent on New Orleans and the Gulf region since Hurricane Katrina ripped the place apart?

I'll give you the answer because you'll never guess it. The grand total is $127 billion (including tax relief)."

Guess when that figure is from...
.
.
.
.
.
It's from *2007*. In only 2 years the US Government spent 127 BILLION DOLLARS in NO and the other areas hit.

The thing is...NO was sort of crooked so it's not a surprise a lot of that was 'misappropriated' (see: Nagin and Co as an example of the climate there) but A LOT of it was put to very good use.

Those pictures of blight and lack of rebuilding are because there was no economic value to do it. Building/rebuilding just to spend money (and have no benefit) is what the Chicoms do and we see how that has been turning out. You invest where it makes most sense and let the rest just be.

The proverbial rug you speak of is called REALITY.

Ok, 20 billion more was spend by 2010 (all earmarked under Bush).

Nice write-up on how money was spent:

You mean the same general US economy that's doing much better under Obama after cleaning up 8 years of GOP mismanagement? Same as it was with Clinton after 12 years of GOP mismanagement? Same as it is with every fucking conservative government on the planet's mismanagement of the economy, the environment, etc.? That's because they're myopic and can't see beyond the end of their own nose. They always and only care about getting theirs and fuck everyone and everything else. In short, conservatives are the reason we can't have nice things and why we're headed into the next extinction level event. But yeah, you just keep blaming everything on Obama. That'll make everything better.
