Satellite Reign Released

5 Lives Studios warns to get out your satellite umbrella, as they have launched Satellite Reign, a spiritual successor to Syndicate created by this developer formed from the ashes of SEGA Australia. Details on the release are on the official Satellite Reign website where they also have a launch trailer featuring a bunch of gameplay. Here's how they describe their game:
Satellite Reign is a real-time, class-based strategy game, set in a futuristic open-world cyberpunk city. You command a group of 4 agents through rain-soaked, neon-lit streets, where the law is the will of mega-corporations.

Our programmer Mike Diskett worked on the mid 90s classic Syndicate, and was the project lead on its sequel Syndicate Wars. Our goal for Satellite Reign was to take this criminally neglected genre and evolve the ideas and themes to bring them into the 21st century—while adding our own unique spin on the concept.

So I've played this.. and it's alright, but not quite what I was expecting. Also fairly hard. I'm gonna give it another try though.

How does it compare gameplay-wise to Shadowrun though? I've wanted to try Shadowrun but really don't want to get into the lore/story etc. I've heard that it's heavily story-oriented, meanwhile I want to focus on the action and my squad, like in XCOM.

The story, from what I'm understanding, is explained a lot more in the book in the deluxe edition. The original Syndicate game had its story in the Manual, so it seems they are similar in that way.

Yep, a bland stealth and cover version of commandos is what came to mind when I saw the gameplay videos, not Syndicate.

Still, atmosphere looks nice and maybe a few patches or creative modders might be able to make something more the way I expected, more syndicate and less generic 4 man rts.

So more CRPG like Shadowrun is what you're saying?

I'd say more tactical RTS with a few CRPG elements. There is no dialog with NPCs or anything like that, for instance. The plot, what there is of it, is all in the mission briefings. I haven't played all the way through, so I can't say for certain, but there also isn't any mission scripting like the parade mission Panbient wants. The city is pretty static. There are enemy compounds and areas with guards patrolling and reacting to the player, but that's about it.

There is some "emergent" stuff going on in the city like citizens fighting or running from police on occasion, but it's not clear what triggers or regulates it or if it's just random happenstance.

I don't want to come off sounding like I don't like it, because I do, but people ought to know there isn't much depth beyond what you see in the videos.

It's good but a lot more superficial than I would have hoped for. I do think it's easily worth the asking price, though. That said, I hope they're successful enough to make a sequel with more depth. I'd like, for instance, to be able to have my own corporate HQ and to have the city itself evolve to reflect the decisions I've made rather than just being a static backdrop. I'd also like the competing corporations to have their own overall strategic AIs similarly conducting operations to undermine my own efforts.

So more CRPG like Shadowrun is what you're saying?

I just hope there's a political assassination in a parade mission like in the original Syndicate. I tried a variety of ways to beat it. Finally settled on recruiting a new agent, giving them some kind of big gun and parking them in the middle of the parade path. Once the traffic stopped he opened fire and the chain reaction took out the target (and pretty much everything else on screen).

All while my more experienced team members nonchalantly walked to the mission exit zone while whistling a jaunty tune over a job well done.

Jaguar8's review/play video is linked above (and I trust him pretty well). Looks solid, but maybe not magnificent. I'll probably pick it up once I stop shadowrunning...

I have it, and it feels much more of a homage to Syndicate than a Syndicate clone of sorts.

So I found out there are pacifist achievements for completing each area, but I'm wondering how that works. I'm assuming stealth is a thing.

Played a few months ago and enjoyed it, but there didn't seem to be much point to the game after a while (a few hours). Didn't seem like much story. I'm hoping some of that is cleaned up. Looking forward to playing it tonight and seeing what's changed.

Syndicate being one of my favorite games of all time, I'm going to have to hold out till the honeymoon praise is gone - there's a lot of stuff I'm seeing that doesn't look appealing in general or "spiritual successor" about it.

It's usually best to play games about 2-3 months after release anyways.. That way you get major fixes and imbalances worked out.
