Bethesda Games on GOG.com

GOG.com announces the release of a bunch of classic games from Bethesda Softworks on their DRM-free marketplace. These consist of the first two DOOMs. QUAKE, the return of the first three Fallouts, and several Elder Scrolls games, including a couple of freebies with any purchase. Here's word:
Today, we're happy to start a blooming new partnership with Bethesda Softworks, one that brings an impressive lineup of their unforgettable games to our DRM-free platform, and plenty of guts and nuclear smiles to our faces.

We're teaming up to release some of the greatest hits from the Bethesda vault, some DRM-free for the first time ever. Eleven new arrivals include The Elder Scrolls and two digital-distribution premieres, totally retro id Software shooters, plus the long-awaited return of the Fallout franchise! To make the day even sweeter, The Elder Scrolls: Arena and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall will be added to your game shelf entirely for free when you buy any Bethesda game.

The Elder Scrolls, perched high up among the most famous video-game worlds ever created, are now DRM-free and updated for your modern computer - you can purchase all three to receive a 33% discount.:
--The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Game of the Year Edition.
--The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard - digital distribution premiere.
--The Elder Scrolls: Battlespire - digital distribution premiere.
--The Elder Scrolls: Arena - FREE with any Bethesda purchase.
--The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall - FREE with any Bethesda purchase, too.

Megahit id Software first-person shooters join the fray - also 33% off if you grab all three:
--Quake including Mission Pack 1 and Mission Pack 2
--The Ultimate DOOM
--DOOM II + Master Levels for Doom II + Final DOOM

And last we find that goodbyes are not forever (and that war never changes). Fallout, the premiere post nuclear role playing game franchise is finally back on GOG.com! Save 66% if you complete your collection in one purchase.
--Fallout
--Fallout 2
--Fallout Tactics

The bundle promos end on Wednesday, September 2, 12:59 PM GMT.

I am going to guess that this is the result of legal crap. You bought it when it was being published by a different company....thus "technically" it's a different product now. It's confusing and a bunch of shit, but I suspect that is why it is that way.

The "new" version doesn't have all of the extras that were included, other than that they are the same. [Source]

I purchased Quake again and now I have the amazeballs Daggerfall and Arena in my GOG account. With a MetaCritic score of 85, I would normally try it. But I think these bits and bytes will remain un-molested.

That's exactly how I remember Daggerfall and it was the last Elder Scrolls game I ever played as a result.

Yep. 10000 km^2 of essentially empty grassland, auto-generated quests that are so crappy that they make Skyrim's Radiant quests look like the Witcher 3 in comparison, random dungeons that are so large that you will literally get lost in them forever, randomly generated towns that all look the same, etc.

I mean, technically the game was incredibly impressive for its day and age, but holy crap is it boring as hell to play.

There's lots of unique things in the game. If you just stick to the main quest, you'll see unique thing after unique thing. The auto generated quests can actually become quite intricate and go in many branching paths. I find that if you get bored in Daggerfall, it's because you've chosen that for yourself. I'm not saying the game is amazing in every way, but you just focused on the bad. I love the huge world, the random quests and the gigantic dungeons. It makes some game systems work in ways that would never be possible in a skyrim or a witcher. You can actually become an outlaw and not completely break your game. You can travel the world and start anew somewhere else. You can actually steal hundreds of items from a single store. Yes, it's not perfect, yes it's broken, but damn, no other game offers such a deep simulation of a "real" world.

I would like to know as well - Daggerfall is the best Elder Scrolls game ever, but I'll only buy it (by buying Redguard, which never used to work on my Cyrix processor) if I can just run it out of the box.

Compatibility is a massive issue for Daggerfall.

I have a question about Daggerfall on gog.com

Is the gog.com version of Daggerfall fully patched?

Side note: Yes, you can download the game for free from the Bethesda website. However, you then have to comb through guide after guide, trying to get it configured correctly. If you play a lot of old dos games, it is a pain to constantly have to do that with each game. With gog.com they do that all for you, so you can just double click the exe, and start playing. That is always worth the low purchase price for me.

I wish GOG would clearly state in the details of who was/is the developer or publisher, like steam does off on their side bar. FO1/2/Tactics was not made by Bethesda, but some people (not here) actually think they were, which is kind of funny I guess.

At least ZeniMax/Beth finally worked out a deal with GOG with all their games (edit - minus Oblivion and Skyrim apparently?)

Good news! I only hope they don't go the geo-locking way and only sell neutered (aka as censored) versions based on ip adresses to people in OZ and Germany.

Dont be. Bethesda just uses/licenced the community mods for their version. It does not matter, if you download/install the new Beth version or mod the old Interplay version. They both are using the same mods & patches. As you say yourself, now its just easier.

Compatibility to all the other mods and fixes is a given.

But the version in your account now is the new Bethesda version, as seen on Steam. With built-in widescreen support and such. The old "real classic" version from Interplay is gone. But the new version still has the "For Gamers-Interplay"-Intro. Bethesda is only copyrighted on the new launcher. Yes, it IS confusing.

You should be able to use the same mods?

True I can use mods but its a bit of a faff for reinstalling, if the new version has it built in, it would be simpler. Its a 1st world problem I know

If someone here never played Daggerfall, they really should. It's a bit complicated and really throws you in the deep end, but this game is something else. It contains stuff no other game does, in a good way. In a bad way sometimes too, but it's really worth seeing it implemented.

I loved Daggerfall back when it came out, but HATED the randomized dungeons. 4 hrs to find a stupid feather or a mob you had to kill. Crime paid alot more in that game

Daggerfall is the only game where you have to start a new character not because you died, but because you got lost in a dungeon.
