Out of the Blue

There was a bad smell in the kitchen that took a couple of days of sniffing around before it was traced to an aging bag of potatoes in a cabinet that had ceased being food anymore. Emptying the cabinet and airing it out for a couple of days with bowl of baking soda inside may have helped some, but it's still unpleasantly stinky, so I'm looking to accelerate the process by investigating other suggestions for ways to absorb the stench. Of course one of the suggestions is that this can be accomplished using potatoes. Maybe I'll ignore the potential irony here and try that... it's like the old saying, set a thief to catch a thief.

You can clean your apartment morning 'till sundown, no way you will get them out of the walls, ducts, elevator shafts etc. They are the scourge of the city. Even in the burbs, you can see them. Although they are usually outside on the street rather than in the home.

That was probably the case when I lived in New York City proper, but I can say with a high degree of confidence that we have no roaches here in the 'burbs.

If he's got roaches in the first place then he's got bigger problems than the ground coffee sitting in a cabinet over night.

Ground coffee attracts roaches though. (If left alone in a damp, dark room that roaches have access to)

My guess is oxygen depletion combined with poisoning, either way the results would be the same.

Jesus, it sounds like a bad horror movie. From the article:

An eight-year-old Russian girl has been orphaned after her entire family was wiped out by deadly gas caused from rotting potatoes.
Grief-stricken Maria Chelysheva lost her father, mother, brother and grandmother who were killed one by one after entering a cellar where they stored potatoes for the winter.

If Russia stops fighting, the war ends. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends. Slava Ukraini!

A few years ago, I made a huge grocery run in the dead of winter. I thought I'd gotten all of the food, but I had overlooked the huge bag of potatoes of the back seat floorboard. I will credit the below zero weather for my laziness in being not terribly thorough in checking the car.

Being utterly frozen, the potatoes didn't produce any smell when I was driving around town. Come the spring thaw, and I ended being sick for a few weeks and didn't drive.

So... one day I finally felt week enough to drive, got in the car, and my nose instantly discovered the potatoes that had been frozen for nearly a month and then in a hot-ass car for nearly a month (or was a late freeze and early heart wave). My God, you've rarely smelled anything that bad!

They had started fermenting. I called the cat a "vodkamobile" during the two week period that it took to air out!

Hydrogen peroxide + vinegar & citrus peels = win.

Non-toxic disinfecting

On their own, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide are each strong germ killers. Used in combination, they're even better!

According to research published in Science News, this pairing is 10 times more effective than disinfecting with either substance alone and more effective than bleach in the kitchen.

I've been using that for years. And it's safe for the Gunnar-Man too! Hell you can even drink the stuff.

Potatoes kept sitting on the counter keep for a significantly long time, and have the benefit of being unable to spoil surreptitiously. Each passing day left uneaten only strengthens their resolve. A point comes where one cannot so much as pass by without sensing a prickling upon the nape, the very gaze of the starchy orbs a palpable and increasingly disconcerting force not to be ignored except at one's peril. The very air seems tinged and dulled as it by the wraiths of a thousand long-dead Irishmen (THAS A BANNY POTAY-TOE!), waiting eternal for the potato that never was, judging always judging you as you ignore the veritable bounty of potatoes upon your counter top. The choice is simple: eat your potatoes, or be driven mad by unbearable guilt.
