Out of the Blue

Was toasting some bread last night and when I returned to the kitchen after a short absence, I found it filling with smoke. It seems the timer gave out on the toaster oven, and it didn't shut off upon reaching zero. It was pretty shocking how quickly this escalated, as I wasn't out of the kitchen for more than a minute before discovering the problem, though the bread was clearly already overcooking when I departed. Anyway, I got it all taken care of before it became a real disaster, and the toaster oven is out with the trash. The good news is the smell of burnt bread is kind of pleasant, so the bit of odor that still lingers is not a big problem. I'm just thankful, as under other circumstances this could have resulted in a house fire. Scary.

Do you eat bread? I've heard of celiac sufferers being offended by even the smell of gluten-containing products. Other medical issues like zinc deficiency can adversely affect one's faculties for taste and smell. I doubt there's anything wrong with the bread itself; the only ingredient in your average bread that would be susceptible to going foul is the yeast.

I guess you could have her try sourcing her yeast differently. If that doesn't work, you should see a doctor.

Good ideas, I was tested for celiac disease a few years ago and I am fine in that regard. The yeast change is a good idea. Something we thought of yesterday is she is adding flax seeds to the bread, so that may be another possibility.
