Funcom Seeking Help

GamesIndustry.biz says Norwegian developer Funcom is "actively seeking interested parties for discussions surrounding a possible investment, acquisition, merger, or any other available options." They say the company has debt to resolve by next June, but the recent relaunch of LEGO Minifigures Online has fallen short of expectations. "The game is currently not meeting internal revenue forecasts," Funcom said several weeks after the re-launch. "This is mostly due to low sales on the PC platform. Sales on the iOS platform have performed better, mainly due to the featuring in the Apple Store during the launch week, but as the price point of the game on this platform is lower, these additional sales are not enough to compensate for the low sales on PC for the time being."

Funcom truly deserves bankruptcy.

They have produced tons of incredibly buggy, half-baked MMOs. I don't understand how they hung on so long.

Anarchy Online is totally amazing. Especially if you are in to scifi and like complex details and twinking.

I have played it for 14 years now. I don't really understand the negative comments about AO, Just because it had a rough launch so many years ago. It really pushed the envelope back then with the size of the world and graphics. It caused a lot of problems because people's computers just couldn't keep up. That was a long time ago.

They have 3 MMO's none of them are "half-baked" or "incredibly buggy". AO, Age of Conan and Secret World. Have you actually tried to play any of them? (well I guess the lego game now)

The LEGO Online thing I guess didn't do well financially, but I read that the game quality improved drastically when they ditched F2P, revamped/completed content, and re-released it as a premium game. Releasing it as f2p first was the big mistake it seems... people are tired of the nickel/dime format.

My dream:

They don't deserve to get bailed out, as they are just trying again to milk whatever they can from AO without putting resources into it.

AO is the only thing Funcom produced that will stand out over time.

Someone at Funcom has a brief moment of clarity, puts AO out as open source, fans mod it into AO2, kind of like how the whole Freespace thing played out.

Absolutely loved AO but got frustrated with the never ending "real soon now" updates and meaningful changes.

And hark, another excuse not to release the updated graphics engine for AO that we've been asking for since 2007!

Without Ragnar I have no real attachment to Funcom. Although The Secret World was one of my favorite MMOs.

Who would have thought that and I quote review "fairly simple MMO fare" "graphics are made for mobile devices" "lacks ANY polish" "feels like a Early Access title" fails economically on Steam.

Really... who?

This makes me really sad. I really like funcom. I love Anarchy Online and secret world was pretty cool to.

I hate to see them fold. Someone needs to buy the right and engine etc for Anarchy online and make Anarchy online 2. With similar game mechanics.

The MMO world needs AO and games like it (there currently aren't any).

The fact that Anarchy Online is still around is a testament to Funcom's dedication or possibly madness. I played that game in 2001 and even though I had a great deal of fun and they had some good ideas, it was a complete mess and most of those ideas were half-implemented with the rest alpha level buggy. Age of Conan didn't fare much better for them.

I've actually been meaning to try out The Secret World, but at no time have I ever had enough faith in the company to remain afloat to even risk the $30 for the initial box. Cool to see them continue to prove me wrong, up until maybe now, but nothing Funcom has ever done gave me confidence that they were reliable.

You mean when you took your failing MMO type game and relaunched it, it really didn't do any better?

Whodathunkit?

I'm sure Turbine thought that same thing about LOTRO and it turned out to be a great success. It was a gamble Funcom was willing to make.

I'm only amazed they lasted this long. I wonder how much they got in subsidies over the years to keep them afloat.

Removing resources from The Secret World and putting them all in the Lego basket seems to have worked smashingly...
