Out of the Blue

My pal MrKawfy sent me this link to follow up on my comment about learning Brian Cox is Scottish. It doesn't get more Scottish than that. And pretty helpful, too.

R.I.P.: Ken Stabler, former Oakland Raiders quarterback, dies. Belongs in the Hall of Fame.

Two of my all-time favorite movies, Dr. Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia due largely to his roles in them.

Indeed. LoA is my second fave film of all time - and first for cinematograhpy - which Freddie Young won an Oscar for that and Dr. Z! His overall career was pretty erratic but he did some really good work in the 60s in particular.

Stabler was a great guy, his foundation raised a lot of money in Alabama for sick kids/RMH. Somewhat related, anyone remember this play? Still nuts all these years later.

Not the way to honor Kenny. That would be this one.

I remember this play more than any he made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0bV0JLbiXg

That is still one of the greatest games in history.

RIP Snake, you brought so much joy to a young kid. And I really loved his radio work doing Alabama football. He told it like it was, the good and the bad.

That's amazing to think that was the last time the Raiders were any good.

Stabler was the QB during Madden's time. That was quite some time ago. Some great football happened back than, including a SB victory, but they had far more success in the mid-late 70s and 80s. The eighties in particular were very good to the Raiders, including their second and third Super Bowl victories in 1980 and 1983. They are tied for 4th most Super Bowl appearances overall, winning 3 of five total, the last being in 2002. All of that Gruden/Callahan stuff was part of a 3 year run as the AFC West champs and 2 years in a row at the AFC championship game.

Yes, the Raiders have sucked for just over a decade-ish but they spent 30 years riding pretty high with Stabler being the guy who was part of starting it all. That's why he is so revered in the Bay Area. When he was playing the AFL-NFL merger had just happened. Stabler (and the rest of the team) gave the AFL Raiders and Al Davis credibility. He was part of a Madden team that created the attitude and the reputation. He was a part of a new generation of flashy/throwing quarterbacks. Those early wins made it so Davis could go get other players and eventually the Hall of Fame coach Tom Flores that led them to the next two Super Bowl victories.

The Raiders didn't stop being good after Stabler, they continued to be great because of guys like him. They have sucked for 12 years because Al Davis succumbed to age and his silver spoon son has no fucking idea how to run a sports team.

I was just watching one of those best QBs of all time segments on the NFL channel last week when they covered the Snake. Apparently Kenny was a real wildman off the field. That's amazing to think that was the last time the Raiders were any good.
