I use my PS3 as the media device hooked up to the TV, but anything would really do. Between Netflix, Amazon Prime, and PlayOn running on a PC to stream Hulu (non-Plus) (and other) content to the PS3, I'm pretty set.

Forget Plex (especially considering they just got hacked). Try Emby, its open source and uses and unmodified version of ffmpeg. Its also free and feature complete. Plex has problems with decoding with some files depending on how they were encoded because they altered ffmpeg and then claim it as their own without due credit.
