Terraria Patched

A new major patch is now available for Terraria, updating the side-scrolling sandbox to version 1.3 with new content, new features, and various improvements. An update on the Terraria website has all the details:
It has been a long road - one full of sleepless nights and tiring nights, laughter and tears, successes and setbacks - but the time has finally come for us to turn our labor of love for the past year or so over to you, our loyal fans. Terraria 1.3 touches on many aspects of the game - from re-imagined sprites and backgrounds to new features and - of course - the new content that you crave - that we truly feel it refreshes and revitalizes the entire Terraria experience. We are confident that you will enjoy what it has to offer!

Perhaps most exciting to the team are the ways in which Terraria 1.3 streamlines the multiplayer experience. Gone are the days of port-forwarding and endless IP sharing for anyone seeking to connect quickly with their friends for an ore-hunting session or to team of up that tough boss fight. We have always felt Terraria was best with a buddy (or ten) - so if you haven't yet, now is an opportune time to try out multiplayer! (Do note that dedicated servers will still need to use the standalone server software, which you can download HERE).

Thanks for the advice, guys! I'm gonna set aside some time this weekend and jump in...I'm so indoctrinated with Minecraft methods that my quick two minute peek left me scratching my head. I guess that's all part of the fun, eh?

Hmmm, went into my 1.2.4.1 world and couldn't remember most things. Might as well start from scratch to begin with... maybe later I can move some old stuff.

Yea best to create a new world, it will insert the new assets.

Time to set aside eight hours for work on another hellevator!

Not sure if you played the 1.2 update, but it is a heck of a lot easier now with the addition of rope.

Ok, new Terraria player here, heavy into modded Minecraft and many (too many) hours in Starbound, where do I start with this? Are there mods for it like Buildcraft? I'm clueless... *ahem* *looks around*...I mean, for once...

Nothing is obvious, but keep checking your base area and craft a bench, an anvil, a forge, etc etc etc. Use the Wiki to get going, it will save you a headache. Go exploring, find chests, and mine mine mine mine mine. Have fun.

This is bad advice for new players. The guide NPC provides all sorts of direction and is always available around the initial spawn point in the world. Don't bother with the wiki until its actually required. Go talk to the guide and he will get you started on the basics. Like most games of this ilk you should concentrate building a shelter first and foremost.

Terraria is not easily moddable, some exist but its nothing like Minecraft yet in terms of availability. You can find some here.

Yeah, the guide's crafting help feature is really good.

While this makes the game all new AGAIN, I'd rather they spent their time on a sequel. I'd rather have all new content to explore than have to hunt through stuff I've seen for an embarrassing number of hours already.

That said, this game is, indeed, one of the best bang-for-buck deals available.

I've had this game forever, but maybe played about 30 minutes total. I'm not into survival games, or "building block" games in the least, but exploration and crazy weapons sounds cool.
I was like you then I saw my friend playing it and it completely changed my perspective on the game. I ended up playing for over 14hrs the next day, which few games can get me to do these days.

Fired it up tonight with 5 other people, the Steam support is awesome, can get games going a lot easier without someone having to do a dedicated server and opening ports.

I do look forward to playing some more - as Starbound is kind of treading water.......

I've never tried Terraria mods... I've only played vanilla and absolutely loved it. All I can say is that the game starts really slowly. It takes a long time to get good minerals to craft good armor and weapons. You'll die often. But at some point the game switches from being about survival into an exploration and combat game with crazy powerful weapons.

I've kept backups of character and world files on my Google drive. Makes it easier moving them back and forth between gaming machine and laptop for travel.

There's a bug a lot of people seem to be experiencing, including myself, that old worlds may not show up in-game. I expect a hotfix for this soon because they've always been compatible.

That's kind of the beauty of Terraria. It doesn't need mods. You can play it as a straight up sandbox or you can go through it like it a progressive game with mini-bosses, Bosses, and End Game Bosses. Take a look at the Terraria Wiki. Make your initial searches for pick, sword, and boss to get a feel for the scope of the game itself. The Guide (npc) in the game has a Crafting dialogue that allows you to drop materials in a slot and see all of the recipes available. The merchant sells a piggy bank and safe that helps with inventory management later in the game. Other than that....just have fun...

Every Terraria patch makes it a completely new game and all of them are completely free. I'm going to spend another 40 hours on it for the third time next week!

There is so much new stuff, it's fucking bonkers. So far, all I've done is run around a bit on a fresh map with an end-game character I still had saved to see some of the new items, but I intend to completely start over soon. It's may very well be the best value for the money you can find on Steam (barring free games that can technically be considered having infinite value for the money :p).
