Scrolls Closing

The Scrolls website announces Mojang's plans to close up their virtual card-based strategy game, a surprise revelation just a couple of hours after the release of an Echoes balance update. The Microsoft-owned Minecraft developer is committing to operate the game for at least another year, and they are continuing to sell it, saying they will use all future proceeds to keep it playable for "as long as possible." Here's word:
Hi everyone,

After much deliberation, we’ve come to an important decision that we’d like to share: Echoes will be the last major content patch for Scrolls. We won’t be adding features or sets from now on, though we are planning to keep a close eye on game balance.

Scrolls will still be available to purchase for the time being, and our servers will run until at least July 1st, 2016. All future proceeds will go towards keeping Scrolls playable for as long as possible.

The launch of the Scrolls beta was a great success. Tens of thousands of players battled daily, and many of them remain active today. Unfortunately, the game has reached a point where it can no longer sustain continuous development.

We’ve had a great time working on Scrolls, and appreciate every last player who’s downloaded our game. Extra big thanks to the most dedicated members of our community; some of you have logged in almost every day since release and dedicated a large portion of your time to dominating the leaderboards and taking care of new players. We salute you, honourable scrolldiers.

We will do our best to answer any questions you might have on the standard channels.

Thanks for reading, everybody.

The Scrolls team <3

so sad. this game is 1000 times more fun than hearthstone.

the gameplay is better, and the economy isn't so soul-crushingly divided that you can actually get good cards for playing a few games. unlike hearthstone where i'm just getting walloped every live match i play by these uber insane decks where i don't have a hope in hell. Oh and i don't even get gold unless i win. LOL

RIP scolls. chalk up another destroyed IP by M$

Seems Notch's notorious MO for starting things and abandoning them has been rubbing off. I fear for Minecraft, I really truly do. They've done nothing but little meaningless stuff for many versions now. They put in bunnies, banners and mutton and the community loses their shit but God forbid they actually update the graphics engine and discontinue support for 10 year old video cards! Most of everything in the game worth playing around with has come from the massive mod community. The devs themselves should hang their heads in shame, especially 'Dinnerbone'. He messes with stuff, posts a screen of it on his Twitter and then we might see something like it five versions later.

As for Scrolls, I guess I better get to actually trying it before it's gone. I'm not surprised.

Agreed. Cutter is just being an asshole.

yeah... putting an ounce of marketing behind the OTHER ip you just bought for $2.5b would be silly.

ESPECIALLY if it's from the hottest devs on the planet, who's other title is the most popular game in the world. Oh and in a time where Hearthstone is the #4th most-watched game on twitch (47,132 people currently watching people play a card game, pfft). yeah... best not to bother.

"and now presenting, the CCG from legendary studio who brough you minecraft, SCROLLS!" see what i did there? that's more marketing than that game ever received.

Oh well, I have 3 of every card in the game, I beat it. it was 2 short years, but I had a lot of fun doing it. It will be missed.

I didn't say it made sense. But, seriously, scrolls was never going to be popular. All I meant was in the mega-microsoft market they cut their losses.

Scrolls may be a good game, but it will never be popular. Microsoft just cut it as a bottom line thing. I'd probably do the same thing.

shit yeah, when you drop 2.5b on 2 IPs, you can't be expected to pay $50,000 for an online ad-campaign. Somehow the Kate Upton shovelware game has all the ads in the world, and last I heard they have a zillion players.

I figured this was coming after MS bought up Mojang. Scrolls did not take off, and they want everyone on the Minecraft cash cow.

They want to double down on the market whey they have dominance instead of dumping man-hours into a card game where they are just going to get shit on by Hearthstone.

You're lamenting monetary gains between mobile games and pc games. Good luck with that. I can show you to a rubber room to express your anger.

I'm not trying to piss you off. All my friends from Dreamworks now work at fucking Zynga. These are people that brought you How to Train Your Dragon.

scrolls is on mobile, well tablets at least, and a droid phone version was planned, but guess what? NOPE

also, it takes a lot of systematic prodding and poking at my tender underbelly to piss me off. And if you haven't noticed, I'm kinda this board's punching bag.

We got the miraculous augment version of Minecraft coming.

Perspective, in the sports world they still marvel and adjust the price of all NA sports teams over the sale of the Clips to Madman Ballmerm, paying 2 billion. Well the clips aren't even worth Minecraft, lol. I'd say you can't reprice anything because of these two purchases, its just MS insanity, not the market working.

They need to make movies fast over Minecraft in hopes to make back their investment.

I'm sure it was, to Notch, when he was personally involved and just as annoyed as the rest of us at the supposed "infringement." It wasn't about the money to him. What he spent in that litigation is probably less than it costs him to refill his candy machines now.
