XCOM2 E3 Trailer

The XCOM website now offers the official E3 2015 trailer from XCOM 2, showing off gameplay from the upcoming sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown. This looks like it may well contain all the content of the IGN video we linked to during the show, but we have not conducted a frame-by-frame comparison. Word is: "Watch as XCOM soldiers strike back against the alien occupation by sabotaging an ADVENT landmark in the first official gameplay as presented at E3 2015."

Close combat specialist and staggered formations aren't for nothing.

True, but you can't always stagger formations. That works fine out in the open, but in the middle of a mothership it's a lot harder to pull off, especially once you go into laser/plasma weaponry, which has a range longer than any hallway you find yourself in, so the staggering means nothing unless you leave your squad out of sight of one another, which is a quick way to get killed on Classic.

I've only lost maybe half a dozen soldiers to situations like the above (One time I lost a colonel to it, though and I just fucking screamed with anger), but it's still just really REALLY irritating. It'd be wonderful to get soldiers to respond sequentially rather than all at once (and it'd be bloody amazing to be able to specify who shoot shoot first, or, even more awe inducing, to specify who should shoot at what targets.)

It should also be mentioned that they've admitted the E3 trailer/gameplay demo is slightly rigged for cinematic flair and expediency. The snake man/woman wouldn't actually get to use the grab move on the triggering turn, for instance (which would've been tremendously annoying).

A significant change for overwatch, if I've understood correctly, is that shots in XCOM2 are taken in sequence rather than all at once. So in the current XCOM, if you have six squad members on overwatch who all see the same enemy moving, they'll all fire on that enemy even if the first guy kills it - basically wasting five overwatch shots.

Oh thank you thank you thank you. Overwatch waste is soooooooooooooo irritating.

I noticed they fired on separate targets too. I hated that in the original. Firing on a dead target was annoying as Hell! I just hope you're right and that they tweaked a few more of the minor annoyances. Like the enemies popping in and out of visual range when you switched between players and enemies being able to see you through walls. The alien space craft were the worse for that. They could target you through the terrain and shoot you from other levels of the craft.

No. Icons and the destruction of icons are an important part of any resistance movement. It also indicates that said resistance has the ability to strike targets, sometimes symbolic is as important as anything else.

Holy shit, I mean Im looking forward to this game but that's terrible writing 101. Why would an elite fighting unit trying to liberate earth from an oppressive alien government risk valuable soldiers to bomb a fucking statue??

Two kills from overwatch? Damn, someone got lucky!

I'll bet that they've adjusted hit rates since the last game, since one of the big things that a lot of people complained about was the RNG being really messy. Though the random seed option fixed a lot of it for those that like to save scum.

Games like Syndicate, XCom, and Mechwarrior all had it. What other modern games allow this?

I don't know if you'd consider them "modern" anymore, but the Silent Storm series was turn based, 6 person party with classes and a wide assortment of weapons... great games.

Soldiers of Anarchy, another mostly unknown classic, real time like Syndicate and utterly insane in the number of vehicles and weapons available. Pretty short campaign with terrible voice acting, but what can you do? Not to be confused with any DayZ mods, I'm talking about the 2002 small squad RTS.

SoA dropped off the face of the planet, and it's not on gog, but Silent Storm is.

It's definitely not a well selling genre though, until the recent X-Com remake.

I'd like to see a new Syndicate done like this. Not turn based though.

I loved the original Syndicate. I love games that let you:
- Research or acquire technology
- Customize your units to suit your tastes
- Test them in the field

Games like Syndicate, XCom, and Mechwarrior all had it. What other modern games allow this?

I played XCOM Enemy Unknown, really enjoyed that title. I picked up Enemy Within but got sidetracked by Xenonauts, logged about 25 hours into my current run.

I won't preorder XCOM 2, but don't take that personally Firaxis, I've been burned too many times.

This new one looks a bit more streamlined and glossy; I would like to see more detail and complexity like that found in Xenonauts.
