Desura & Indie Royale Parent Bankrupt

Bad Juju, parent company of both Desura and Indie Royale, has filed for bankruptcy protection, reports Gamasutra, with the news coming just a couple of weeks after reports of missed royalty payments to developers. The situation is a bit cloudy at the moment, as they state that Bad Juju's head of developer relations says she learned of the news through Twitter, and that the company's CEO told her he was instructed by lawyers not to answer any questions right now. They also note that the developer of Project Zomboid is recommending that players who haven’t activated Steam keys purchased via Desura do so "as soon as possible."

Right, if Steam were to go under the games would be unlocked. How do I know this? Simple, if it were to go under and we'd be screwed, good luck to the industry ever trying to sell digital games in the next 25 years. The industry in a whole would have to make sure it was a soft landing.

Haha you're talking about gamers, one of the dumbest demographics on the planet. People said the same thing about DRM you know that right? DRM won. We had LAN taken away in starcraft 2 and diablo 3 is always online. Two flagship properties totally locked down. Not a good idea to think your fellow gamers are intelligent.

Fortunately I only have Project Zomboid purchased there and nothing else. Definitely a good preview of what happens if/when Steam goes under.
Not even a decent preview of what will happen if Steam goes under. Desura is mainly DRM-Free so you can right now go and download almost all the games you ever bought from them and keep them and install them later to play. Basically you can preserve the content you bought so the money you spent didn't just disappear.

The "Steam-pocalypse" should it ever occur will be much much worse. You'll be able to download all your games but once the Steam servers go down, with a few exceptions, you will be SOL getting the games to run unless each and every publisher issues a steam removal patch before steam servers shutdown (which won't happen). All the thousands of dollars you spent over the years will have disappeared with the steam servers.

I don't know about all that... If Steam were to ever die, it's not like it would happen in a vacuum, and since Games already work offline, I could see a client update that lets you stay that way indefinitely, before they close up for good. Outside if that, even non-piracy people would have a pretty damn strong case to get all their titles back in other ways ; )

some latent part of me still feels this way but, really, this is like not using gmail because you're just anticipating google goes under and takes all your email with it. how likely do we think this is going to be after 11 years of the platform being the center of the pc universe?

just as soon worry about the inevitability of resource depletion and electricity failure preventing you from playing games, too.

Haha, you suckers, playing your "video games" that need electricity. Once the power goes out, I'll still have my table top games I can play. You guys are a bunch of suckers!

Well to be fair, convenience was only like $30 net over many years (I probably gave Royal $15 for tons of games). Sure, principles and etc., but for indie games this is hardly the worst thing in the world.

Get that Hard Reset key though, it's good.

Ouch!

I have a pile of games on Desura, and bought a lot of Indie Royale bundles. Like every bundle site, sometimes it's great, and sometimes not so great...

Sounds like a good time to grab every key in sight, and download whatever isn't also on Steam...

Haha.

No seriously... I've never heard of these and I also just did a quick google search of news to find out that Linden Labs probably made out like Bandits after selling to Bad Juju.. haha.

Well the first bloated bundle company corpses are washing up on the beach I guess. Now that everyone has a 500 game library there's no need to pick up Alien Maze Thing 4 even at a deep discount.

Lol, you mean, with a CEO face like this: http://www.badjuju.com/wp-content/uploads/tnovak-photo.jpg

Seriously, though, they must have had no idea what they were getting into with digital distribution, going bankrupt 7 months after the acquisition.
