Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy Launches

Slitherine announces the release of Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy, with their space strategy game for Windows and OS X carrying a 10% launch discount. This new trailer offers a look at gameplay and here's word:
Developer Black Lab Games focused on designing a unique sci-fi game with deep tactical mechanisms. Thanks to the simultaneous turn-based approach, not only do players have the time to think about their next moves, primary targets, and fleet positioning on the battlefield, but they also have the excitement to see the result of their choices during intense real-time sequences.
Human and Nautilid factions have very different assets and superior firepower will not be enough to seize decisive victory when the enemy benefits from more units and better positions. So daredevil commanders will have to keep a cool head if they want to see the end of the war…

So I am two hours in and this is my first off the cuff opinion:

Pros
  • It's fairly easy to understand and uncomplicated.
  • Tactics actually matter.
  • The music is decent.
  • True 3D, multiplane movement and range of motion.
  • You can create your fleet formation before starting combat.
  • Multiple ship classes enable you to create true fleets of complimentary roles instead of just a collection of ships.

Cons
  • The writing is terrible, like the sci fi story you wrote in Grade 6 terrible. Awful and painful.
  • The graphics are definitely outdated and lagging. Very fuzzy and a lack of definition.
  • The weapons don't really have a lot of punch to them. In this I mean it doesn't feel like you're firing off heavy ship based weapons. Missiles, in ratio to your ship, are hilariously huge while beam weapons are almost comically small.
  • Standard mission fare; blow these ships up, rescue that ship, etc.

This is on my list of things to review, but I have other things to do first and I just did a tactical space strategy game so I'm kinda looking for something different for a bit

I'll be trying it tomorrow morning. It's going to take me all night to download.

Gameplay looks interesting, but that trailer was pretty bad. Why not explain what your game is and how it's cool and unique? Not some random lady talking about ship status

I only remember Combat Mission, and there the draw-backs were always that you couldn't ever predict where the enemy would BE after your turn, and hence your movement was always just a guess. I assume in space, this turns into a circular dance?

In Combat Mission enemy AI usually didn't move because of this. Which made that game even more annoying ;p

I'm a big strategy fan, but I've played only one or two simultaneous TBS games. It was so long ago, I don't really recall the experience. What are the drawbacks?
If Russia stops fighting, the war ends. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends. Slava Ukraini!

Someone play this and let us know.
