Dirty Bomb Open Beta

Splash Damage announces the promised open beta testing is now underway for Dirty Bomb on Steam, offering a new Open for Business trailer from the free-to-play shooter. Here's the rundown on what to expect:
Players in Dirty Bomb’s Open Beta will initially find 12 Mercs to fill out their squad. Two Mercs – Combat Medic Aura and Fire-Support Specialist Skyhammer – are always available free to players, and there will be a variation of additional Mercs free on an ongoing basis. To kick off the Open beta, the following Mercs will be in free rotation beginning Wednesday, June 3:

  • Kira, a powerful tactical character who can rain down hell from above with her Orbital Laser Strike, perfect for clearing out defenses and campers
  • Sawbonez, a frontline support medic equipped with a Submachine Gun and Defibrillator Paddles, who is highly effective at reviving his teammates to full health
  • Fragger, an aggressive pointman and straight-up player-slayer, with a big gun, lots of ammo, and devastating Frag grenades

Players also have the option of purchasing Mercs for their squad, including long-range sniper Vassili and the Minigun-toting walking tank, Rhino.

The Open Beta launches with five maps and two modes for players to put to the test. New content will continuously be added to Dirty Bomb in the coming months, whether in finished form, or prototype content for the community to try out and provide feedback on.

It used to be on Steam.

Well, after Brink...

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was their last decent title, but sad to say they've been going down hill since. It will be interesting to see if we ever see anything much from these guys after this title fails to gain much traction.

ET:QW was decent...yes, but not brilliant compared to Wolf:ET. Splash Damage is a one and done team, sadly.

I can't understand why they simply not just make a new graphically upgraded version of Wolf:ET? Everyone who played it liked it, and I'm pretty sure there is a new generation of players who would do it too.

Severed ties to the Wolf series as it's now in the hands of Bethesda, Quake Wars was a failure. From the early marketing materials they made it look like a tactical squad based military shooter but somewhere between alpha and the beta people from the Quake community said "faster! faster! faster!" so you ended up with soldiers being able to outrun vehicles.

Maybe they did the multiplayer portion?

Correct, Splash Damage did the multiplayer portion.

You mean people actually played multiplayer in a Batman: Arkham game? That doesn't sound right to me. I think you can keep on saying ET:QW was the last one.

Weird, the wikipedia page says Warner Bros. Games Montréal made Arkham Origins, but the Splash Damage website claims they made it. I wonder how that works.

I noticed that as well. Didn't remember their name on that one, and ended up at the same wiki page. Maybe they did the multiplayer portion?

Didn't they do one of the Batman games?

Hmmmm.....I would have never thought, but I had to do a search, and you're absolutely correct! They developed Batman: Arkham Origins, which I guess did pretty well too. So, I sit corrected. Embarassed

Thanks jdreyer.

The developers thought, "What could make our next game after Brink better?" ... "Why, pay-to-win micro-transactions of course!!" Hence, we have Dirty Bomb!

FAIL.
