That figure was for all three platforms, not just PC. Also, a large portion of the 400k Steam copies were very likely pre-orders, so adding that number on top of the multiplatform pre-order numbers isn't quite accurate.

Unless it states otherwise, those would be sold copies post-release in most cases of metrics measuring.

Not sure if you understand how SteamSpy works. It basically takes a sample of Steam profiles and sees what games they own, then extrapolates that into total number of owners on Steam. It does not distinguish between pre-orders and post-launch sales.

And again, the 1.5 million figure was across all three platforms, not just PC. The SteamSpy figure of ~450k gives a pretty accurate number for PC sales. Given the sales breakdowns of other games, GOG and other sellers probably contribute 50k-100k, so ~500k total seems fair. That's not an awful number, given how new the game is, but it's not nearly enough to cover the costs of developing a 3D, open-world, 100+ hour RPG with high production values. That's why Witcher 3 is multiplatform and why all future CDPR games will be multiplatform as well.

I can't rebind movement keys. I have to hack up the input.settings file to get the bindings I want....and the next time I run the shit game it screws up keys that I DIDN'T rebind. 30 minutes in and I still don't have the control scheme to a functional place. I should have gone the damn console monkey route and just used my 360 controller.

You can now rebind everything.

The update reset controls to default, might have been it.

All my controls except for modify attack/quick use (and inventory, map, menus etc...) are on a 1 handed mouse set up and it controls great. Ya his movement is terrible, obviously made for consoles when trying to fine tune your walking direction but the controls were easy to bind/get ahold of.

Though why you cant use SPRINT to gallop on a horse is stupid, needs to be 2 different keys (on foot sprint vs horse sprint). Like surfacing when diving, cant use your jump (which would be up underwater) key to do that either.

That's included in today's patch, although I'd never play it with a mouse keyboard. I prefer to sit back and play it on the big screen with a controller. You don't really need the high precision that a mouse gives you in W3.

Combat and roaming are better with a controller, but mouse is much preferable for inventory management. And I must say, the menus are pretty good for a game like this. Clean, but not hiding everything away either.

I'm not surprised sales are only at 450k, I've only seen one other person on my friends list even playing it. It sucks but a lot of people just take a sale mentality to PC games these days, especially since many are running backlogs.

Sale mentality? What sale mentality? Look at the no. 2 spot on the list which has been in the top 3 at full price for weeks now.

Nah. It's mostly CD Projekt's own fault. Why do they chop up the game and announce 16 DLCs (and two expansions) before it's even released?
For many people, myself included, the logical conclusion is to wait at the very least until the 16 DLCs are released. Some people might even wait for the two expansions or an Enhanced Edition (like me).

Everyone knows about their excellent post-release support by now. People know that the game will be much better in a few weeks/months or in a year from now and everyone is expecting an Enhanced Edition.
Only the very impatient overhyped herd mentality gamers are buying a game like this on release. Everyone with the slightest ability of self-restraint would be waiting for the inevitable Enhanced Edition to have a better experience.
I know I am and from reading many comments on the net I know there are many, many, many more. As you said, people are working on their backlogs as they wait for CDP to release the 16 DLCs, the two expansions, patch the game and release the EE.

Finally, the second quarter is traditionally weak in sales and many gamers are probably still busy with GTA V and have no open world RPG itch at the moment.
Summer is approaching. The days are getting longer. People spend more time outside and a super-long epic RPG like TW3 may not seem so appealing to many at this time of year. TW3 is the kind of game that would most likely do quite a bit better in sales in fall/winter.

Lastly, the one million dollar question is how much does DRM-free hurt their sales? Every average Joe can easily freeload the game with zero effort (not that cracked games would be that much harder to install/play but it just does not get any easier than with TW3).

Most likely GOTY. Can't think of anything else coming out this year that could potentially provide a challenge.

Maybe Fallout 4 if Bethesda announce it at E3 and release it in November. I'm personally not overly interested in postapoc and TW3 would be my GOTY but objectively I could see FO4 dethrone TW3 if it comes out this year.
Except for that, yeah, no contest. There'd have to be a huge surprise release out of the leftest of fields to touch TW3.

one thing kbm does NOT give you is analog control... which is very helpful

also i noticed many of the actions do not have keys assigned to them (whereas they do on a controller) so im not sure whats up with that..

for example, when using kbm theres no button for "dodge", only "roll".. maybe its a double tap? i dunno theres no prompt.. also there are many other actions like that

...depending on how fast we get MOD support and tools might even rival the mighty Skyrim with regards to PC sales.

I'd seriously doubt that for a bunch of reasons.

The most obvious being they don't have a modding community remotely near what was waiting for Skyrim.

One of the reasons they don't have that community is because they haven't catered for it anywhere near as well as the Elder Scrolls series. Even when they did encourage modding in Witcher 2 with the RedKit, it seemed like a mess with even the most simple mods being incompatible because they both want to alter base_scripts.

I'll openly admit I don't know much about modding in Witcher 2 but it doesn't seem like they made the game with modding in mind, I've never seen anything resembling load orders for mods and wouldn't be surprised if it's not even supported or possible. An editor may help making new quests or something but doesn't really mean it encourages modding if the game doesn't sensibly cater for running more than one mod at a time.

I'd be, frankly shocked if they've pulled off modding in Witcher 3, so far if anything it's pointing to not being the case. Modding is primarily a PC thing if you will, generally made and played on PC, so considering they don't even have rebindable keys on PC I'm having a hard time seeing they've put the effort in for it being remotely as moddable as something like Skyrim especially since that would rely on early design decisions that would range around ridiculous/insane/impossible to patch in. The game as it stands at release either has great modding potential under the hood or doesn't and that's very unlikely to change in future. Considering their track record I wouldn't hold my breath despite how much I would love its modding to take off both for the game and the company.

It could do wonders for both, hell the only reason Skyrim still enjoys sales worth mentioning is because of mods, period. Having said that I can't help also saying that's why I'm am thoroughly disgusted by Bethesda trying to worm in on getting cuts of any paid mods. They already get their cut, which is considerable via sales thanks to mods.

I have to admit I may be contributing to that, to me this game is a sale target because.. a big RPG like this, you play through once and forget about it.. not worth 50€ (or even 60€!) imo.

I'm not paying $60, and the $40-$45 GMG still wants for it applies to GoG... which I'm not signing up for. Since new releases are notoriously slow to reach sale prices on Steam, I may end up just getting W3 on PS4. It'll fall to my price range on Amazon well before it does on Steam.

Yeah the competition is pretty rough, GTAV is still going strong and people will probably buy that before W3. But then again the Witcher3 site redirects to GOG, not Steam. I would really like to know the GOG sales numbers for this game.
I have a nifty blue line!

Unless it states otherwise, those would be sold copies post-release in most cases of metrics measuring.

SteamSpy lists copies OWNED (on Steam) at 458,628

That puts it between Pillars of Eternity and Clicker Heroes

If true, then that is quite bad for a game of that size.
