Anyone predicting prices is an idiot. If they really knew what "currency fluctuations" were going to do then they would be a billionaire and could make trillions from the futures markets.

People do this all the time with the stock market, some better than others. Gartner is a research and advisory firm they do stuff like this for a living. Will they be right? Who knows? But I would say they know a little more about it than the average Joe.

Yeah they have just enough rope to hang themselves

Prices haven't changed for me for the last 15 years. I build a high end system for $800-$1000 every 4-5 years, biding my time on deals and pcpartpicker till I get what I want for the price I want.

Everyone else probably if they aren't thoughtful about expensive purchases.

The article's reasoning for predicting a price increase is due to currency fluctuations (those economies that are weak to the US dollar). I don't see how that's exactly specific to PC prices though. In Canada, I've already felt the effect of the weakening CAD against the USD for other goods.

Really all depends on Fed policy - if they decide to raise interest rates, that should strengthen the dollar and make a lot of import purchases considerably cheaper. Right now, with most monetary policy observers thinking the Fed will keep a zero rate policy through 2015, the dollar should slide against international currencies barring any nasty surprises overseas (China's economy bottoming out, a Grexit, major natural disaster in SE Asia, etc.).
