Out of the Blue

I passed a new threshold of geekiness over the weekend by tuning in to the Heroes of the Dorm for a virtual viewing party with a couple of the mutants to watch the online semifinals together. I have not been drawn in by eSports too much in the past, but since Heroes of the Storm is one of the games we're currently playing the most, we managed to get pretty caught up in this. The broadcast was interesting, though I would say it was not ready for prime time, as there were many issues, not the least of which was the poor job they did of adequately showing the on-screen action. They frequently scrolled past points of interest, had a maddening obsession with crowd reactions (so they'd pull out to show the audience on takedowns while other important action was going on), and for some reason did not keep the minimap visible (the only times they brought it up was to cover the entire screen). The funny part for me was recording the finals on real TV and forgetting that it could run long, just like a traditional sports event, but luckily I was able to find it online.

And the fact that it makes a supreme putz like Colin Cowherd bust out the snark about guys living in their parents' basements makes it that much better, because it leaves him trying to justify the idea that being a sports radio host makes you an athlete or something completely different from being a pasty nerd who watches other people play games (except that's *exactly* what he is). I hope ESPN makes him cover the next one to test his threat to quit/put a gun in his mouth.

Did NASA Just Accidentally Produce A Warp Bubble?

Remember when that extraterrestrial sound turned out to be interference from a microwave oven? I'm guessing there's probably some explanation along those lines for this.

*sigh* What is this world coming to, when a humble farmer can't build a lewd display out of hay bales without getting hassled by the man!?

I read everyone's comments before seeing the picture. That's obscene? Wow, Australia must be more prudish than the USA.

Common misconception, most Australians (myself included) would support the farmer. But we have a small but extremely vocal bunch of handwringers and a government more than willing to entertain their amazing capacity for concern over the most irrelevant bullshit...

It's kinda sad though, we used to be a country of people proud that we had more deadly creatures per square meter than any other place on the planet (might actually even be true ; ), but these wankers that complain about shit like this are turning us in to a country of bloody wimps...

i find it amusing that his name is a near homophone for coward, cuz that's exactly what he is. he'll never back up his bullshit.

i doubt esports will ever go mainstream in the US just cuz our media lean heavily conservative esp. compared to the rest of the world. they'll abandon it before they put in the effort to get it right. starcraft has a really good internet esport coverage network though.

Pretty sure NASA creating warp bubbles will be reported by a better authority than some site that also advertises that I can fix my vision with eyeball yoga.

Was wondering the same.

You should check out The International sometime, TI4 had pretty good announcing and should be the standard for esports.

Sports journalist. There's a misnomer if I've ever heard one. Yeah, it's beyond sad when clowns like that think they can take pot shots at other people. You sit around talking about sports all day. At least video games are interactive and you actually have to participate.

And good on that farmer. Plans to light it up at night now just to spite the man. Lulz! Love...it!

And that would be so cool if this led to warp technology. Let's face it, most of the great discoveries happen by accident.

I don't have a lot of interest in esports, but if it gets people interested in video games, that's fine with me. I will say that let's plays/previews/reviews/etc have basically become my evening television...guess it's all a sign of gaming becoming more accepted to the mainstream.

Gotta agree with your assesment of that coverage Blue. The commentary and broadcast of e-sports leaves a lot to be desired, this is especially true of the few HOTS tournaments Ive watched onine. The biggest mistake they make IMO is that they put two or more guys who get into a shouting match while they trade 'ideas' about what is going on in the current game, instead of, focusing on the game itself?
