PhysX Source Code Released for Free

NVIDIA announces that the source code for PhysX is now available to developers for free, saying this will "will accelerate the adoption of PhysX," the physics middleware (thanks HARDOCP). Here's word:
Used in more than 500 games on multiple platforms, NVIDIA PhysX is one of the most popular physics engines for game development.

The PhysX software development kit (SDK) is already free on Windows platforms. We’re now extending this to include PhysX Clothing and PhysX Destruction, enabling game developers to easily create a more interactive gaming environment.

And starting this month, the PhysX SDK is available free with full source code for Windows, Linux, OSx and Android on https://github.com/NVIDIAGameWorks/PhysX.

The PhysX SDK is a proven solution for gameplay physics and simulation-driven effects. It is integrated into major game engines such as Unreal Engine 3 and 4, Unity, AnvilNext Engine, Bitsquid Engine, Dunia 2 Engine and REDengine.

NVIDIA PhysX Clothing and Destruction are integrated into the Unreal Engine 4. PhysX Clothing and Destruction effects can be seen in games such as: Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Lords of the Fallen, Monster Hunter Online, Daylight, as well as upcoming titles such as The Witcher 3.

A major component of the NVIDIA GameWorks library, the latest PhysX version (3.3.3) is our best ever, with improved stability and performance. Features include constrained rigid body dynamics, collision detection, scene queries, character controller, particles, vehicles and much more.

So is this the big reveal that was supposed to be done on the 5th or was it that streaming garbage that they announced yesterday?

From what I've seen of streaming, it's terrible even on a local network with a great PC. I tried it a while back and the lag and control issues prevented it from being fun. It was just a waste of time and a bunch of frustration.

...releasing the source code can help a lot more than it can hurt.

Does this mean that people can use it with AMD or is it still locked to Nvidia only?
I am thinking you will still need Nvidia hardware to run PhysX

Windows 10 goes free(kinda, sorta), Unreal 4 Engine goes free, PhysX is free now, what the hell is going on, it's the apocalypse!!!!! Good stuff.
You've missed Source 2 also free

You're right. I read something about that also. I wonder if this will put pressure on Carmack to release idTech 5 Engine for free. I hope so. Can't be anything but good for everybody.

What does Carmack have to do with it? He doesn't work for Bethsoft anymore.

I don't understand how these guys can just give these things away after sinking so much time and money into them. I get Source 2 as those games will likely end up on Steam anyway, and Unity has a monthly fee, and UE4 has royalties, but this?

Development tools in general tend to make more money off of licensing and services than from the actual product. Also, as far as the source (as stated above, the sdk was already free for a while) is concerned, it looks like people are starting to realize that releasing the source code can help a lot more than it can hurt.

Back when Carmack was still with id, he wanted to release the idTech 5 source at the same time as Rage. Everyone else had a cow so that never happened. Since Carmack is now gone from id and he was the main one that pushed for open source I doubt we'll see id engines opened sourced again. I hope I'm wrong though.

But UE4 is far superior to idTech 5 and probably 6 anyway. It's a wonderful engine.

I look forward to poking around in Source 2 as well.

They must be on steam.

Titanfall is a Source engine game, and it's not on Steam.
Source 2 games dude

Valve won’t be asking for any money at all. Well, sort of… They just require that the game be launched on Steam, along with anywhere else you might want to sell it.
