Out of the Blue

Almost like it knew the time is upon us to change the clocks again, one of the BlueTower's smoke detectors started beeping last night (Murphy's Law dictates they always go at night). This is something both the detectors have been doing lately, way too soon for it to be time to change the batteries. This was the last straw in my decision they both need to be replaced, and examining and doing a little reading about them, I realize this is completely on me, as these guys are close to 15 years old. From what I can tell, they should be replaced after 8-10 years, so I've been skating along with sketch safety equipment for a while now, which is scary.

in vietnamese there's no word for green, which is odd considering the whole country is covered in green jungle. there's just the word for blue, and to get green you add a modifier, literally, "blue in the shade of tree leaves". very environmental language, which is not to say we have difficulty seeing any colors. afaik no one in my family has difficulty seeing blue or green.

That sounds similar to Japanese. I wonder if this is a trend in most east Asian languages, as they seem to share a lot of other similarities.

where does your knowledge of japanese come from? closet anime fan i bet =D

Actually not a huge fan of anime, though I love Miyazaki's work, and have watched most of Naruto among others. I lived over there for a few years in another life, and picked it up when I was in country. It's not that hard to learn to speak, but it's a major pain to read and write.

Right you are. Laurier was another asshole who doesn't belong on money either.

Carbon monoxide detector replacement check with manufacture. Some are 3 years, or 5 years, or 7 years.

Also if a chain of smoke detectors are going off, check manual on how to tell which one in chain is triggering. Some are light or sound or voice extras on triggering one. Some you can hit silence button to see, etc.

Remember to pick right smoke detectors for one near kitchen. There's two main type s of detectors, best to have both most places. One is better at slowly burning fires, one is better at fast ones.

I got to check out a Neil DeGrasse Tyson talk while back in Tdot, and he does a great "bit" on who we put on our money, which countries actually put scientists on their bills, what different countries value.

I had spiders living in one of my smoke detectors, and when one went off, they all went off since they're wired together. No idea which one was triggering it, but I opened them up and vacuumed them out, and haven't had a problem since.

I agree, that was a pretty excellent Wes Anderson send-up while also standing on its own. And I say that as a Wes fan.

That Wes Anderson spoof was terrible. The Star Wars one was miles better.

And yes, that gas tank vid was totes staged.

The article about trust and reliability assessments from dogs is interesting. We only deceive ours about going on vacation, we have to hide the suitcases and etc otherwise she goes bonkers. Luckily we've found a good house sitter to keep her company so it's not too bad.
