Unity 5 Released

The Unity website announces the launch of Unity 5, the latest version of this multi-platform game engine, offering a free Personal Edition and a Professional Edition for $75.00 per month. Word is: "Unity 5 is the new edition of the best development platform for creating 2D/3D games and interactive experiences. Unity 5 brings you awesome new artistic power. Improved efficiency makes the hard work smoother and more fun, and with the industry’s most comprehensive multiplatform support, you can now launch your game on 21 platforms." Here's a feature list:
Unity 5.0 is our biggest and boldest release ever. Powerful new features in Unity 5 include:

  • The Physically-based Standard Shader to make your materials look consistent in any lighting environment, cross platform.
  • Real-time Global Illumination, built on Geomerics Enlighten technology.
  • The Audio Mixer, to massively improve audio in your game.
  • HDR Reflection Probes to enhance visual fidelity.

Do you consider Hearthstone's graphics to be dated? Certainly stylized and relatively simple, but they're pretty crisp and consistent overall. Hearthstone is built on Unity.

The Unity engine has historically seen terrible graphics because most of the people making games with it are not artists. Looking at Hearthstone, it is a relatively simple interface, but they look decent because professional artists were designing them. Every single Unity game out there could look just as good, but not too many professional game studios are using the engine. They either develop their own in-house engine or whatever.

That was basically my point. Below Unity was blamed for having bad graphics, but it's not due to limitations of the engine as was implied.
