New Guild Wars 2 Cameras to Include First-Person

ArenaNet announces they will add new camera options including a first-person viewpoint to Guild Wars 2 in a patch for the MMORPG they plan to release on March 10th. They plan on unveiling this further in a livestream tomorrow on Twitch which should get underway at 3:00 pm EST (9:00 pm CET/ 20:00 GMT) and that will be followed by a new article on the plan on GuildWars2.com. Here are the details they are revealing for now:

  • First-person Camera
Zooming in all the way will allow players to experience a first-person view. First-person mode is available while standing in place, walking, running, jumping, playing PvP and just about anything else. There aren’t any restrictions on where first-person can be used.
  • Field of View
A much requested feature, the field of view slider is a setting that will allow players to adjust how much can be seen in the game world. Players can use a slider to shrink or enlarge the field of view.
  • Position Slider
The Position Slider has been split into two different options, horizontal position and vertical position. The horizontal position slider will offset the camera to the left and right. An ‘over-the-shoulder’ view can be created as well to keep the centre of the screen clear. The vertical position sets the maximum height the camera can go when the camera is at maximum distance from a character. The actual camera height will adjust the more you zoom in to ensure that your character is always on the screen.
  • Collision Sensitivity
When enabled, this setting will adjust how much stuff (trees, walls, rocks, etc.) needs to be between a player’s character and camera before the camera snaps in.
  • Character Height
No matter the race or size, the camera will now focus on a character’s head. This is going to give norn players a relatively taller feeling than their asura-playing friends. This change might affect players who frequent jumping puzzles, so to counteract this, there is an adjust camera to character height toggle. When unchecked, the camera will move to a consistent position above the character’s feet, regardless of how big or small the character is.

I don't know where you went to find 'almost no players outside of PvP' but I suspect it was in the middle of no-where in some mid-lvl zone. But even those aren't empty these days... especially if there's a Daily goal in them.

I got fed up with this game about a year ago. Went back last week just to see if it had improved.

Nope.

Same old crap, but with almost no players, anywhere outside of the tired and static PVP.

If I know Arenanet this change won't actually make any difference to a large norn toon trying to navigate many of the cramped caves, puzzles etc.

these changes are exactly the kind of thing everyone on this site asks for. hardcore computer game shit that developers don't deliver anymore because they've sold out to the lowest common denominator.

well here it is, folks. I'm here to say that I do not play this game, and it is fucking awesome.

it's probably going to outlast the longest MMO I ever played, which was Asheron's Call for 3 years.

Yeah, but have you ever sucked dick for coke?

Lots of people would love to have their longest MMO problem only be 3 years long

I could probably live without these changes which I did while I was an active player. The thing that killed the end-game, overworld experience was culling but since that got fixed these are simply added bonuses for when I return either at the new expansion or to amass a new mountain of wealth shortly before.

Also, where's my Quaggan race, dammit!

Wow this is as much asnd more camera changes that the community has been requesting for some time. Glad to see it finally coming.

And Wtf_man, your talking about the level 80 zones collectively called Orr. You may be interested to note that the whole 'monster density problem' was toned down a little some time ago and there are half a dozen zones for level 80 in the game these days. Though if you do your personal story it'll always take you there, it's entirely optional.

When did they change that? Last time I played (I think right when the marionette event got released) it was still like 2 months after release.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

Sounds like the expansion will be more along the lines of the Silverwastes too, so it should be fun. Good to see these camera changes too, been a long time coming.

To be fair, Orr is explicitly designed and portrayed as a WAR ZONE, the front lines where the Pact is constantly butting heads with the Risen hordes. You should know what you're getting into when you go there. I like that some areas are (were? I haven't been there much lately) not just passive monster zoos where you can go hang around and safely AFK until you're ready to go fight something by yourself. Camps being contested, waypoints being disabled, vendors retreating to safety, are all cool, dynamic things that make a game feel more alive. There are few enough places like that as it is, where you may not be able to Rambo through stuff on your own... If you don't like it, fine, just stay away.

I was only periodically logging in to unlock the living story episodes during season two, but recently I discovered the Silverwastes and how fucking awesome it is. If you don't like Orr, you definitely won't like it, but it's kind of like World vs World but with AI opponents. You're retaking forts and constantly defending them, defending supply caravans, and it culminates in a huge raid boss fight that splits the map population into three groups that have to work together to succeed. That's the kind of stuff MMOs need more of, not maps full of mobs just standing around until someone comes along to kill them.

At the time it was Malchor's Leap and Cursed Shore Zones... the beginnings of Orr?... I can't remember.

Anyway... after futzing in those zones for a couple of weeks I was completely turned off by the game. I'm glad that they possibly fixed it, though.

Still a bit overpopulated, but WAY better than it was at first. You couldn't walk 5 steps without being attacked. Now you can mostly avoid combat if you are careful. The original GW had a bunch of places like that as well.

I thought that I read that this game was coming to PS4 at some point. Anyone know anything about that? I've pretty much left my practically brand new gaming PC to collect dust in the corner in favor of the ease of console gaming. Blasphemy, right!?

It was going to be released on PS3 and 360, but they eventually decided against it. I wouldn't hold your breath on a next gen version either.

Ok, thanks for the info.

Good, now maybe I can complete jumping puzzles on my main, who is a Charr. Before I had to switch to a human alt just to be able to see what the hell I was doing, since cameras for Norn and Charr are so messed up.

Yawn. The only update that will ever get me to care again is the one where they turn it into a real successor to the first GW. So, never.

They addressed this one recently and said they're going back to fix it. Whether that's before the expansion or not, I'm not sure.

This'll be nice for VR. Having the head level match up in first person mode will be good to try out on the Oculus Rift.

I really like the game but there's no argument here. They've done so much to improve QoL since launch, but so many other launch issues that really need to be addressed still exist. The vast majority of players either do champ runs or dungeons for pve/crafting, or wvw/pvp/1v1.

I play on and off with my son, but he plays constantly and almost exclusively pvp unless he's leveling a new guy. They try to find "glitches" alot too, very popular among younger players to run outside the zone areas to see how far they can go...
Yours truly,
