Ship Ahoy - Total War: ATTILA

SEGA announces that Total War: ATTILA is now available in all regions, offering the latest installment in Creative Assembly's historical strategy series. Here's the game's launch trailer, and here's the announcement:
Total War™: ATTILA is now available to purchase at retailers and available for digital download.

The Dark Ages approach. A time of famine, disease and war, where refugees in their thousands flee from a sweeping tide of destruction and death. Desperate barbaric tribes rally against the ailing might of a dying and divided Roman empire; the light of civilization gutters and dims. In the great steppes of Scythia, a vast and terrifying force gathers, led by a warrior king whose thirst for conquest is utterly unequalled.

The Scourge of God, the very herald of the apocalypse, Attila the Hun.

In the next instalment in the multi award-winning Total War series of strategy games, Total War: ATTILA introduces exciting new gameplay mechanics which improve and add to numerous core turn-based and real-time Total War systems. The world will darken around you as Attila’s forces descend on your homeland creating a unique vision of survival strategy.

I paid full price for that pos game. The forums were always filled with people complaining about the same crash... that they never fixed.

Empire came out almost six years ago. You're still using the same computer?

I haven't had crashes in Empire for a long time. Have you considered, the fault could be on your side?

I tend to have a preference for anything set in medieval periods when it comes to total war, but my favourite to date has been Shogun 2 - it was simply the most complete TW package to date IMO. I am also admitedly very biased when it comes to feudal Japanese history. I think most TW players are also fans of history and tend to play favourites based on the time periods represented.

The general consensus is that its basically not terrible like Rome 2 was, from what I read. The DLC policy will continue though, so there is that.

I still prefer the originals before Empire and wish the games were like that, but alas can't change CA/Sega's way of doing things in this weird Modern Age of gaming. Inevitably, I think the TW series fans are forever split between the hardcore fans of the olden days and those that need to have every TW game.

But eh, plenty of other games out there for me rather than stress over TW too much.

So far it's been very good. It's comparable to Shogun 2's Fall of the Samurai expansion, a fully featured, very good addition to the Total War lineup.

Attila thus far looks superb and feels a lot more meaty than Rome 2. I wasn't going to pre-order out of principle this time round as I was one of the many who were burned hard with Rome 2's release, feeling somewhat bitter for preordering when it was such a buggy mess on release. But they did work long and hard on it (long being the key word - something like 17 major patches) and did fix the game. It's not perfect - no TW ever is, but it's expotentially better than it was on release, a night and day difference in fact.

Attila builds upon that. It's brought back some of the features that simply shouldnt have gone. It's taken away the shitty mobile phone style tech trees, it's brought back family trees, the combat isnt blobby and feels right - the fire is awesome.

Anyway it's still early days, i'm working through the prologue, but as someone whose clocked a lot of Rome 2 and can reccomend it even despite it's release flaws, Attila thus far has a seriously dark personality/vibe that's easy to get behind.

After Rome II, and all of its crap plus nickel-and-dime DLC, I'm done with the TW series. CA has had me as a customer since the original Shogun but every game in the series has seen a decline in quality and consistency from the last one.

In my opinion, the best WH:40K RTS is still Dark Crusade.

I'm enjoying Rome 2, it's worth $15, hardly worth $59. I'm also not playing the buggy and fundamentally broken version that came out at release.

I really wish Paradox, Matrix Games or TW series would take on Ancient Egypt or Ancient Sumeria. Kind of sick of Rome/Medieval/WW1/WW2 historical themes.

Kind of sad the Children of the Nile is the defacto Ancient Egypt strategy game.

Still have yet to hear anyone say they've been looking forward to this one, but I was kinda "meh" about the idea of Napoleon after Empire too, even though it *did* improve a number of things. IGN says it's good/better, but the siege AI can STILL be retarded...

From the review I've read this one is an improvement over Rome 2 but still not perfect.
I didn't put a lot of time into Rome2 and Shogun2 but I am meaning to go back and play them.
Chances are the Ai in this game is the same as Rome2 has right now after many patches.
