Valve on the Future of High Performance Graphics

The Game Developers Conference 2015 Scheduler shows a session to be presented by Valve at next month's GDC on "The Future of High Performance Graphics," which will include members of the Frostbite engine team, Epic Games, Oxide Games, and Unity (thanks PC Gamer). With Valve focused on the ability to offer games independent of Windows, getting better control over the graphics API seems a next logical step following the launch of SteamOS, and the description of the session suggests that's what this is about:
Join us for the unveiling of Khronos' glNext initiative, the upcoming cross-platform graphics API designed for modern programming techniques and processors. glNext will be the singular choice for developers who demand peak performance in their applications. We will present a technical breakdown of the API, advanced techniques and live demos of real-world applications running on glNext drivers and hardware.

It's early days yet. Give it time. Once Windows starts closing its ecosystem and if this crossplatform API turns out to be the shit, Linux desktops are finally going to be catching on.
I hope so! Come on, Linux.

Fair enough
Let's hope Valve will actually finish some of these projects in our life time.

But you say it yourself, in order to run Origin you need to run Wine or some other Linux platform. Well that is exactly my point. SteamOS is not capable to run anything but Steam stuff.

SteamOS is perfectly capable of running anything, its not Valves job to port every program under the sun. On a console you can't just publish a program without permission, you can do that on Windows and SteamOS. They are no different, Windows just has more compatibility.

You're a cool guy but there is no other way to put it here, you are wrong about pretty much everything related to SteamOS. I installed it for awhile and don't use it anymore but that's a personal choice because its so fucking alpha right now it hurts.

Oh I've read it.
than I don't get your comments
I was well aware of the beta being available since 2013 Dec I even said on the previous page that I did not see any huge leap forward in the beta since it's release.

Anyways!
Hopefully Valve can pull it off.

You kind of put words in your own mouth and I found that funny.
You previously hadn't said "available" but others had. But then you responded, "By available I meant it is finished. Thought it was obvious but it seems like it wasn't for everyone."

Ah yes, this is exactly what we need, yet another graphics API to continuously keep fragmenting the market. Yay?

yah, when i think of OpenGL, all i can think is: "now who is this new young upstart?" That's all we need, one more brand new 23-year old API fragmenting the market.

*and before you all say: "it's not openGL it's GLnext" i'll tell you that new branding on an iteration of an old product does not a new product make. unless they throw out everything they've been doing, and have decided to just make a new API from scratch.

Yeah choice is good like we have Linux and MacOS and all that great stuff and guess what people use for gaming?
Wonder why?
All I am saying is unless SteamOS offers something that is better for users than what we already have noone will use it. Kind of like right now about 5 people uses Linux for gaming according to steam h/s survey.

What topic are we in? Oh right...glNext a modern alternative for gaming API's across multiple platforms.

You do understand why Windows is the dominant PC gaming platform? DirectX. They are trying to create a modern alternative as one doesn't currently exist.

But by your words, they shouldn't even try with SteamOS and glNext because it won't be good enough right away?

If you have to run something else in order to play your other games than might as well just run Windows that does everything already.

It's not about my expectations it's just that I don't see the justification in running SteamOS when Windows does everything without limitations and does it better.

Because it would be open-source cross-platform. That's why. If you don't understand the benefits of those 4 words when they are combined, then you probably just don't understand.

All you are saying is "We already have an API that plays all the games I want to play so why bother with anything else". Because choice, freedom, power, and transparency are all good attributes of any product you want or desire.

DirectX was all good up until the point Microsoft tried to foist their Windows 8 pig on the world. This is why choice is always a good thing.
