Witcher 2 Prompting Linux Kernel Patch

Softpedia has word that Linus Torvalds plans to address problems running Witcher 2 under Linux with a kernel patch for the operating system, explaining that it fits his development philosophy to not force developers to work around kernel issuers. Here's his explanation of why the operating system needs a patch to support a proper port of CD Projekt RED's RPG sequel, which currently runs under a wrapper of sorts: "It looks like LDT_empty is buggy on 64-bit kernels. I suspect that the behavior was inconsistent before the tightening change and that it's now broken as a result. I'll write a patch. Serves me right for not digging all the way down the mess of macros." Thanks Ant via Linux Today.

The dude who made the change that broke this (as well as Linus) own exactly ZERO steam games. Which you can also deduce from this exchange. I think that's quite funny Though maybe not surprising...

QFT. They really should own a game or two for testing. He wants Linux on the desktop so bad, he needs to accept that games are going to be part of that and test for them.

It's nice that it's being fixed, but I think if Microsoft put out the exact same announcement they'd be raked over the coals.

It's not an announcement. Linux is not a company. It's just Linus speaking with other devs. Blog sites made it 'news'.

The advantages of being open source software. "Devs of game, I will patch the Kernel so you guys don't have to work around the OS." These words are probably never uttered at Microsoft or Apple.

Microsoft has extensive testing and compatibility modifications to ensure applications, such as games, do not break. So casting aspersions that direction is pretty silly as their entire business is built on the promise of compatibility.

However, I will grant you that Apple definitely hasn't proved that they care very much except for the largest vendors (Adobe, etc.).
You have taken a very uncharitable reading of what I said. I know MS test extensively but nobody at MS has ever publicly said what Torvalds said. That's what I was trying to say. I was trying to be very specific too.

Isn't this something people were complaining about 8 months ago, back in May? It's nice that it's being fixed, but I think if Microsoft put out the exact same announcement they'd be raked over the coals.

Apple doesn't care about Adobe. Adobe products have been broken on the release of new OSX versions before and Adobe didn't get access to preview builds so they found out when their customers found out.

Earlier this week Linus also declared they were keeping support for Acoustic Couplers because they have 1 active user in Russia that requested they not remove support in a new kernel update.

Now *that* is support!
That's because he's the only Linux user in Russia
