I know what the fuck it is, and yes it is something to get angry about. Vets coming home from a war are survivors. People beating cancer are survivors. Getting trolled or called names online doesn't make you a fucking survivor, not even a victim.

I don't know what's more nauseating, that Quinn is still milking her 15 minutes of undeserved fame in this manner, or the way the author of the article linked wears his bias on his sleeve when he defines GamerGate as an "online hate group" in his first sentence.

Shame on Quinn for starting it, shame on Ben Parfitt for writing about it, shame on whoever submitted this article for submitting it, and I really thought better of this site than to greenlight garbage like this for publishing.

If you can't see that these are disturbed people trying to cash in on the recently popularized status of "victim", then you're just another sucker. Zoe Quinn and her type are all over the Internet these days. They are professional victims, known only for being victims, and who spend all their time trying to make sure everyone sees them as such. They make zero efforts to stop the harassment or move past it. They immerse themselves in it, and go out of their way to attract more of it. Why would anyone do that? Well, most people wouldn't because they are sane.

But these are mentally ill people who crave acceptance and popularity. They know by poking some anonymous mass of people with a stick over and over again, they will always be guaranteed some level of harassment or other inappropriate response. That harassment, in turn, leads to emotional and financial support that they cannot get on their own.

This is not new. We all knew this type of person in high school. Literally everything was the end of the world for them, and for a while, their gaggle of friends would provide support. Of course, most of us got tired of needy whackjobs, so it only lasted so long. On the Internet however, there's an endless stream of people seeking to make themselves feel better by sticking up for someone they perceive as a victim.

I'm sorry if I'm not losing some sleep over some rich white trust fund baby getting some mean words thrown at them online when real suffering is happening to real people out there.

Let's just call it what it is: A bunch of stuck-up white bitches crying over nothing because they lack perspective.

I always just assumed that beremot was just a sockpuppet of Zoe Quinn anyway.

So I've finally taken some time to read up on what has happened in the last few months.
From what I see there are quite a few people who align themselves with gamergate that deliberately hunt down anyone who dares to say anything against their behaviour or their motives by trying to get any information (including addresses and addresses of friends, relatives etc.) they can and then publish them on the internet.
If some posts/reactions can be trusted some take even a weird kind of pleasure in doing harm to people with differing ideals, even going as far as calling the police by reporting fake crimes or whatever. This is already sociopathic behaviour. However, since it's coming from places like 4chan it's actually not that surprising.

What I don't yet understand is why so many of you take offence at what's being done to combat that kind of behaviour. Judging from the wording some of you even take that as a personal affront.

Harassment in any kind of form takes its toll on one's mind, be it anonymous or not.

I get the feeling that the whole "ethics in journalism" thing is just a front and gamergate is not about that but about some people getting off to harassing others on the internet. Which, actually, is also not that surprising.

Sounds like you, like most media took bias and only looked at one side of the story.
More then enough of the people that suppport gamergame have also been harrassed, Doxxed, and send stuff in the mail like needles and dead animals.
