If a reviewer is forced to recognize that other components of a game are well implemented they may be less likely to give the game a low score because all the female characters are carrying around a pair of award winning watermelons. Basically forcing the reviewer to look at other aspects of the game than focus solely on one component.
I always preferred no categories (because often good games were rated worse because of graphics), but you made me realize, that categories indeed make sense.
