Respawn on Titanfall on Origin vs. Steam

There's an interview on GameInformer.com talking with Vince Zampella about Titanfall, Respawn's "mystery project," and more. They frame one question around their theory that the PC edition of the multiplayer mech shooter suffered from being on Origin rather than Steam. His response doesn't disagree, as he says: "At some point you look at it and you say is it even worth now this much later the effort to put it on Steam, when it would be a lot of work and kind of bifurcate the community? We would have loved for it to be on Steam from day one, but at some point it just doesn't make sense anymore and you start looking to the future and I think we should not make that same decision again."

Vince is full of shit, I'm betting right now, if he had to do it all over again, this game would still not be on steam.

This is whats called talking out of your ass.

I would also argue that what killed this game was MP only. not Campaign.

Oh, I agree that what killed this game was Origin.

Not that he has much choice there. But hey, if EA doesn't want my money anymore, they can keep releasing their shit only in Origin, I will keep giving my money to other publishers.

No proper single player, massive bloat with "uncompressed audio", filling up small maps with bots to try to hide the lower player count, unimpressive amount gadgets and weapons to pick from, selling multiplayer maps as DLC or a seasonpass - which very few purchased and those that did never got to play because of the lack of players, no dedicated servers.

I don't think Origin killed it, even if it were on Steam it would have died a quick death just like other games have, Brink anyone?

Correct. No SP and bots, Origin only = fail. Sucks to be a one trick pony.

Unmoddable MP shooters not named Battlefield or Call of Duty have the live span of a mayfly. The service doesn't matter. Still, making it an Origin exclusive was face-palmingly stupid.

What a lot of publishers are failing to understand is that us gamers are now spoiled for options. There are so many great games out there, we dont have the time to play the all.

So if / when a game is released for Origin only for example. There are people like me, who despise Origin. We are happy to give that game a miss.

Or, and I cant talk for anyone else. But when EA release a game ill never, ever buy it on release. This is because ive learnt over the years to expect, an Inflated Price, its going to pushed out too early and it will be Buggy as hell. It wont be the complete game, ill have to buy DLC to play the game it was meant to be.

tl;dr fuck EA

The Battlefield series seems to be doing fine as an Origin exclusive. If the game was good enough people would buy it on Origin.

Funny how he says we should not make the same decision again.
I don't think he can make any decisions. He does what the publisher tells him to do. If his next game will be funded and published by EA he can make all kinds of decisions it will still be an Origin only game, and won't be sold on Steam.

The roll out and support of this game was out of step with the modern multiplayer game.

Should've skipped the publisher, gone free to play with a market around items and events, and continually released new content both minor and major. Basically it should have been CS:GO in all regards but gameplay.

The small amount of players surrounded by AI bots didn't bother me and the map design around this player count was excellent... but part of these hypothetical ongoing updates should have increased the player count with releases of new maps.

I always felt the people bitching about the AI bots and player counts prior to release were way overreacting. Not every game has to be huge, in fact, it's often more fun to have fewer people so you stand out more. There's room for everything, and more doesn't mean better. I get driven insane when people act like everything needs more. And farming AI sounded inspired.

What killed the game, in my mind (I have not played, but neither had anyone else when most wrote it off) was the lack of modes. True, 90% of online games are probably team deathmatch. And true, 90% or more of the hours spent in CoD were probably online vs single player. But people still want that value in order to spend the money in the first place. No single player was killer. And so many standard multiplayer features being delayed past release was also killer. People wanted all of that.

The game wasn't finished in time to be a launch title, and like most launch titles it was half baked. Just a bad idea. I remember Perfect Dark Zero - it had some good ideas but was also half baked. It was a series killer. I think that's been true for many launch titles. They aren't fully finished because they rush to make launch, and they aren't a large enough leap away from the previous gen, so they never truly satisfy anyone.

Battlefield does well because it's Battlefield, a series that has been popular for over 10 years. Titanfall was a new IP with no established audience.

People like to say "Oh, but look at Dragon Age and Mass Effect and Need For Speed and Battlefield! They sell great on Origin so obviously being an Origin-exclusive has no impact on sales!" What they forget is that these are all well-established series and that only the newest entries are Origin-exclusive. The games that made the series popular? Not Origin-exclusive.

Being on Steam would have definitely increased Titanfall's player base.

This. Despite all the yapping at release about it being the "FUTURE OF FPS", this game was one dimensional. It had a stompy robot gimmick....but it was about as complex as a matchlock.

The beta of Titanfall (AKA, my first impressions; not much changed on release) was some of the most fun I had with any game, all year.
I also bought it on release.

But I quickly lost interest. Why? Titanfall *was* a lot of fun, but it just doesn't have staying power.

I actually like Origin more than Steam at this point, so that didn't influence me, at least.

...Though the 50GB install did. I was running a 240GB SSD in my PC for much of the year, and a 50GB game needed to be pretty damn good to make the cut there. But once I upgraded, I still didn't really feel like going back.

I still think Titanfall had some of the best mixed gameplay mechanics under one title. It managed to do what Brink tried to do around fast fluid gunplay. The card boost system and having to pick a few before the map and choose when to use them brought nice variation. Using your mech as bait with the option to control it is genius. The game was/is a ton of fun, it just sucks that the community wasn't there and/because it's on Origin.

Origin is annoying, mostly because EA won't go back and fix pre-origin EA games' friends lists to work with it. Lowered visibility by limiting it to Origin was one thing.

The 50 gb install is what kept me from buying it. Uncompressed audio so it works a little better for people whose machines can't run it anyway? Terrible decision. Not going back to allow for compressed audio and a smaller install proved that their ONLY idea of "ongoing support" was to sell DLC.
