Blizzard Exploring Gold for WoW Playtime Exchanges

There's a World of Warcraft in the New Year forecast on Battle.net discussing future plans for the MMORPG. Included is word that they are looking into ways to allow players to essentially trade gold for playing time through in-game economics. Here's word:
We’re exploring the possibility of giving players a way to buy tradable game-time tokens for the purpose of exchanging them in-game with other players for gold. Our current thought on this is that it would give players a way to use their surplus gold to cover some of their subscription cost, while giving players who might have less play time an option for acquiring gold from other players through a legit and secure system. A few other online games offer a similar option, and players have suggested that they’d be interested in seeing something along those lines in WoW. We agree it could be a good fit for the game, and we look forward to any feedback you have as we continue to look into this feature.

That doesn't even really make sense. For every schmuck who buys extra game time off them to sell in-game, there's a person in-game buying their game time with gold instead of cash.

Blizzard would, in the long run, break even. Though surplus game time floating around in the market would buffer it a bit. But if there's too much game time and not enough buyers, then people will stop buying the game time, or the prices will plummet, etc.

Unless they charge significantly more for the time codes than for normal monthly subscription fees, they don't make much money, if any at all in the long run.

Eve online was doing this before it was cool.

Except you can buy pretty much everything with the currency in Eve. In WoW you still need to grind for those goddamn BOA items. Fuck BOA.
I have a nifty blue line!

CCP has to be amused with that one. Since they basically pioneered that system with the PLEX.

With the expansion post-level cap leaving a bitter taste in my mouth and their forecast offering nothing of value about helping with that, them getting excited about new ways to kick the cash cow and make it moo just sort of irks me.

This is a good way to cut down on illegal gold selling. It doesn't stop it entirely, because the Chinese usually have better prices, but plenty of players would prefer to use a legit scam-free way even if they aren't getting quite as much gold.
I don't much care (since I haven't played for a few years now), but I'd say it more accurately legitimizes gold farmers.
