Spaceship Ahoy - Elite: Dangerous

The Elite: Dangerous forums announce the official release of Elite: Dangerous, as version 1.00 of Frontier Developments' space combat sequel is now available. The game's official website is non-responsive at the moment, but that forum post has some details:
A 30 year legacy, and more than 2 years of development, and we're thrilled to announce that Elite: Dangerous 1.00 is out now, available for download and play.

Thanks to everyone who played this far - see you in space Commanders.

Ed (and the whole of the Elite: Dangerous development team)

Change log for those updating from Gamma:

  • Prevent missions softlocks when switching servers from A->B->A without disconnecting from A
  • Check if we should use the neutron star's version of the bolometric luminosity first to prevent soft lock
  • Avoid crash in creating a location object when it hits a rare window
  • Sky box view distance altered to reduce memory usage in highly populated regions

Well, he is talking about HOTAS-only. I didn't mean literally the shift key, just that same sort of effect -- he'd be pushing one of the buttons on the stick, flipping a toggle or whatever to modify the actions of other buttons, switches, etc.

Oh, that makes some sense. Hmmm, didn't even consider that -- I kind of think the of HOTAS and keyboard as an either/or situation.

I use that. Really good stick for that price, though for ED you do have to make use of modifiers to have all the important actions on the stick only. It took me a few days to get comfortable with it, and I occasionally use the wrong modifier for an action. (target nearest instead of supercruise is one that happens a lot on my setup). I use the hat for docking precision controls, which is a bit weird but seems to work ok.
Modifiers? As in third party programs?

I assume he means "shift key" kind of functionality -- a button, toggle or other control modifies the binding on other controls to allow doubling up for more actions to be bound.

I'm contributing!

Is it only available to purchase from the official Elite Dangerous site? Because I can't find it anywhere else and it's priced in Euros which makes me wonder about any region-related license.

Also, is anyone out there playing with a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X combo? It's cheap and if ED is something I like (stop! ) , it's probably more than enough to suite my needs since I likely wouldn't want to play this game on keyboard and mouse.

That's what I'm using. I wouldn't mind 2 or 3 more buttons, and it would be nice if the cable between the two controllers was a bit longer -- but otherwise I like it very much.

Yeah, you can only buy it from the elite dangerous store website. Don't worry about the currency, it will convert to whatever you need. There's no region lock...once you buy it, you get an account that you can log into from anywhere.

I haven't used that particular joystick, but it's pretty popular on the forums, so people must like it. I use the Saitek x52 pro myself.

I remember reading on the Elite forums a lot of people using that.

The Type-9 fucking sucks. It's sooooo slow, has a terrible jump range and is pretty much defenseless.

This ship is an order of magnitude better on every level. It's not as fast as the Clipper, but it has a decent turn rate. I upped its cargo capacity so it's pretty much on par with a t9, but it has a much better jump range. Two jumps instead of four. And it's much more fun to fly. The only weird thing is that the cockpit is on top of the ship...to dock you have to almost scrape the ceiling...my first try through the mail slot I crashed into the wall. Took a few more attempts to figure it out.

Wow! You got a 'Conda, that's very impressive. Although my E:D wallet went screaming out the door

But, man, you can seriously eff people up with that ship.
Doesn't seem that way to me. I need to switch back to Gimballed weapons, the turreted ones suck. It might just be me being bad at the game, but I had a much easier time in battles with the Corba than I do with the Clipper.

Edit: Might also be partly due to having Grade D shields, need to get those upgraded.

Ya, definitely not an explorer ship. It's more territorial. But, man, you can seriously eff people up with that ship.

I feel bad that you don't like the Clipper. It's pretty much becoming the favorite of the current ships.

I guess I don't know what you want. The Asp is amazing. Pretty much the best ship in the game...and will be amplified in wings. Mark. My. Words. So many weapons. With another ship taking off the heat, Asps will be the fucking rogues of Elite. *Shank* dead.

I love the Python. A lot of people are pissed that it got nerfed. It cannot immediately turn on a dime. Oh noes! It is still the best combat ship in the game. It also has great trading potential. The hybrid works as well.

The higher level ships are awesome, but each have weird issues. The Anaconda is the perfect ship, but an A class rated one will cost about $800m. So...not gonna happen anytime soon.

Using up a third of the tank on a single jump is ridiculous. Twice (out of not that many long trips) I've had to stop and go looking for a star I could fuel scoop from because the route selected had two non-scoopable stars in a row leaving me in danger of being stranded if the third was also not scoopable. It's no way to run a railroad.

Class 3 Fuel -- booo! Although I haven't traded it in (yet) the small fuel tank on the Clipper is reason enough to not own one. This ship would seem to have a similar problem.
