Spaceship Ahoy - Elite: Dangerous

The Elite: Dangerous forums announce the official release of Elite: Dangerous, as version 1.00 of Frontier Developments' space combat sequel is now available. The game's official website is non-responsive at the moment, but that forum post has some details:

A 30 year legacy, and more than 2 years of development, and we're thrilled to announce that Elite: Dangerous 1.00 is out now, available for download and play.

Thanks to everyone who played this far - see you in space Commanders.

Ed (and the whole of the Elite: Dangerous development team)

Change log for those updating from Gamma:

  • Prevent missions softlocks when switching servers from A->B->A without disconnecting from A
  • Check if we should use the neutron star's version of the bolometric luminosity first to prevent soft lock
  • Avoid crash in creating a location object when it hits a rare window
  • Sky box view distance altered to reduce memory usage in highly populated regions

Sounds like the sickness is realistic

I probably won't get VR at this point; it will be a Vive 2 with a Geforce 1170 or something like that. A higher resolution should help readability.

I guess if you dogfight and get into circle strafing, that could be bad. But, if you do that in Elite, you'll die before you get motion sickness.

Eve: Valkyrie makes me sick, I'm working up my tolerance. But there's no refined flight mechanic, there's not even throttle just boost and brake. That leads to circle strafing enemies, flying through buildings, and madly looking around where the guy is that's shooting you. That's how one gets sick.

Yes! It's rated "Intense", but of the VR games I have it's the least nauseating...as in none.

My main gripe is that there's so much text and after awhile, it gets blurry. There used to be an outside app that would sharpen the text to fix this, but recent updates have killed the compatibility. It's kind of funny, my only solution so far is to actually lean in closer to the panel like you would in real life. Others have found changing the UI color to a cool blue instead of orange makes it easier to read.

The blur isn't that bad...I didn't even really notice it until a few weeks later. I was too busy looking at my virtual avatar controlling the joystick in-concert with my motions.

Flying an Anaconda through the mail slot is waaaaay easier in VR.

I just gotta say, this game is amazing. It's a straight up sim, so if you get bored take a break for a couple months. Then come back.

It will definitely save space... I talked to a guy who plays with a mouse/keyboard. I don't even know how that works. You'd have to pry my HOTAS out of my cold, dead hands. It adds so much immersion to the game and I'd rather not relearn any controls.

With an oculus, I'm learning how to play blind, so I've been slowly mapping all the commands I need to the flight stick. I've found using the galaxy map in VR is almost impossible. I don't know why that's the one area in the game where it won't use your headlook as the cursor.

Thanks for the info Vall
I have to figure something out with all the wires.
I like to play with TrackIR and my HOTAS but my desk is a total mess when I have all that stuff out, and do not use it for any other games.

Maybe I should try playing with a controller

When you drive a scarab, think Nasa on Mars going 3 kph. Drag racing will blow you up right quick.

I just spent 30 hours playing over the weekend. Yeah, a lot changed. First off, you fucking die ALL the god damn time. The npc AI are outright bastards now.

Message me if you need help, I just figured out how to get Engineers going. I think you stopped even before the Galactic Powers released.

Short answer, buy a planetary landing module. They can fit into a class 2 slot. Once you get that, you buy the scarabs (rover) like ammunition. If you die while in one, you just warp back to your ship, so it's not a total pain in the ass.

Engineers require you to play pretty much all aspects of the game. You search signals and salvage parts (stay the fuck away from threat level 4...I found 0 works great for me, much less dying). Use the scarab to mine on planet surfaces for crafting materials. Do missions for special materials you see when they pop up. Finally, certain mats need to be bought from certain stations (mine intro one for Farseer was 400ly away).

It's a huge pain in the ass, but as far as SPACE SIM goes, this is perfect. I also just started replaying it again after a 6 month hiatus. Flying an Asp too, as it has a far jump and only $1 mill insurance.

I just got my TrackIR setup last night again, going to get the HOTAS setup tonight. It's been a while since I played Elite, started getting the urge again.
The Gamescon Braben interview got me excited.

I played yesterday for a couple of hours. After I was almost killed in my Cobra MKIII again I bought a Viper MKIII and outfitted it with some beam lasers and multicannons.

I don't know what happened but I got very lucky. I was flying around Alioth 4 in a RES and managed to make ~1.5 million. It took me between 30 minutes and one hour. The game just kept spawning ships with bounties between 100k and 200k credits. Started off with an anaconda and kept spawning pythons and what not. Used my last bullets to kill another anaconda and then jumped back to Golden Gate.

Unfortunately I couldn't reproduce that same experience and only managed to make about 500 thousand in total in two subsequent runs which cost me 3 hours or so. Spent about 1 of those hours running from an Anaconda with 0% hull and a bounty of 213k. What a shame.

Anyway, I changed my plans. I will now bounty hunt until I can afford a Vulture (just have to find one of those in or around Alioth) and then I will bounty hunt some more to finally get my Asp Explorer. I was thinking about just buying an Asp Scout but people aren't very kind towards that ship.

I'll probably sell my Viper but keep my Cobra. Despite not having any luck with bounty hunting lately it's a trusty ship.
